The 1970 follow-up line “We’ve had a main B bus undervolt” was addressed to a listener in this city.

2x champ Fred Vaughn did very well yesterday. His winnings rose to $36,300. In his third match, he will try to keep the momentum going against these two players: Gerry Matatics, from Scranton, PA; and Sonam Shah, from Greenville, SC.

WHAT IS HOUSTON?

“Forty-three years ago [now 46], on April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 blasted off from Kennedy Space Center. Destination: the moon. But about 56 hours into the mission something went terribly wrong.

‘Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here,’ commander module pilot Jack Swigert said to mission control.” (Business Insider)

Gerry didn’t have an answer. He lost $8,598 and was left with $2.00.

Sonam came up with Philadelphia. That cost her $12,201. She finished with $3,999.

Fred thought it was Los Angeles. He lost his $7,500 bet so he ended up with $13,300. His 3-day total is $49,600. Tune in tomorrow to see if Fred will become that 4-day champ we’ve been looking for.

Would love 2 see US Coast Guard questions from 1/25 shown. Granddaughter is a Coastie veteran but couldn’t see 1/26 show due to college class

  2. Dalton Higbee says:

Man, I was hoping one of them to win more than $40,000 if Sonam had $20,200 heading into the Final. I was also hoping one of the players to get Final right. I hoping to see Fred become a 4-day and 5-day champion, that we’ve been waiting for over three or so months.

Ironic that Gerry didn’t get that Beckett DD but gave his reply to the Italian opera in French.

Shoulda thought of Godot, mon ami :):)

41/61 here. Fred didn’t make the usual first place wager in this case. But he got lucky as Sonam’s wager was inoptimal from second place.

    • EricS says:

Indeed. There is a strong case for a 1001 wager by Sonam. A correct response would have locked out Gerry, and not effected her chance of winning if the leader provides the correct response. It would have also given her the best chance to win on a triple-stumper.

  5. William Weyser says:

Fred, it’s $13,700, not $13,300! $13,700 is the score you need to get the 14th spot in my 6th version of Tournament Of Champions.

I really would liked to have seen the clue writers seek a response on who uttered the quote. Lovell, who was the Commander on Apollo 13 and portrayed by Tom Hanks in the movie, doesn’t seem to get a lot of credit or attention. After all, he was the one who uttered the words in today’s fj clue and not Swigert.

There’s a fantastic youtube video that plays the actual conversation between the crew in space and the personnel at Houston. It’s great!

    • jacob ska says:

Btw, it was Commander Lovell who said “we’ve had a Main B Bus undervolt.”

    • VJ says:

Well, according to the transcript, Swigert said Houston we’ve got a problem first and Lovell repeated it and then told them the problem (the line in the clue)

Had to laugh at Alex talking about how important it is to relax and how relaxed Fred is. Yes, indeed. Fred is so relaxed that he acts like it’s a chore to pick the next clue. No joke!!
