Final Jeopardy: Religious Groups (1-25-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/25/2017) in the category “Religious Groups” was:

Their name comes from the Greek word for “Egyptian”

New champ Loren Lee Chen won $19,899 yesterday. In his 2nd game, he is up against these two players: Hugh Dinteman, from Atlanta, GA; and Stephanie Cornelison, from Asheboro, NC.

Round 1 Categories: U.S. Islands – The Yellow Hornet – Sports Abbrev. – Businesses – Sailor Talk – Three Sheets to the Wind

Loren found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Businesses” under the $800 clue, with 5 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $3,000, $1,600 more than Stephanie in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Loren finished in the lead with $6,800. Stephanie was second with $1,400 and Hugh was last with $800.

Round 2 Categories: The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson – Movie Musical Roles – The World at War – Far Out! – We Have “U” Surrounded! – Over Hill, Over Dale

Loren found the first Daily Double in “World at War” under the $1,200 clue on the 9th pick. He was in the lead with $10,400 at this point, $8,600 ahead of Stephanie in second place. He bet $1,000 and guessed MacArthur. That was WRONG.

We didn’t get to the last Daily Double today. It was either in the RLS category under the last 2 clues or the “U” category the $2,000 clue.

Loren finished in the lead with $15,400, another runaway for him. Stephanie was next with $2,200 and Hugh was out of the game at this point, in the hole for $800.

BOTH contestants left got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS COPT or COPTIC?

St. George Coptic Orthodox Church in Philadelphia has a short paragraph that explains that “the word ‘Copt’ itself is derived from the Greek word ‘Aegyptus’ which means Egypt. This appears to be a matter of belief, however. Tour Egypt claims that invading Arabs “had problems pronouncing the term, Aegypti, which means ‘Egyptian citizen’. Essentially, they changed the word to Copti.” Coptic Cairo says” “The word probably originates from the old Egyptian word Hwt-Ka-Ptah which means the “House of the God Ptah”. While the Greeks used the word Aigyptos for Egypt, the Copts used the Coptic term Kyptos.” Take your pick.

Stephanie had “the Coptics.” Alex said it was really the Copts but they’d accept it. She didn’t bet anything so she remained at $2,200.

Loren had Coptic. He added $739, winning the match with $16,139. His 2-day total is $36,038.

Wow, 2017 has to be the worst start EVER for the leader before Final.

    • Lou says:

No kidding! Just like the early january 2016 with three contestants ending up with zero and then three weeks later we got our first 4 time winner. So this year will be like last year. Still though you have to admit Loren’s play is like Arthur Chu and Seth Wilson. Also, VJ how early do the coptics date back to in Egypt?

      • VJ says:

@Lou, I guess it’s like I said in the recap — depends on who you ask. Although Mark the Evangelist is generally credited with converting Egyptians in the first century, the dates of his arrival differ in various accounts.

Remember that DD on Monday about St. Mark’s relics being transported from Alexandria to Venice? Here’s a story on National Geographic about it. Apparently, transported was a euphemism – the relics were stolen and while his body (or parts?) made it to Venice, his head is still in Alexandria.

That MacArthur triple stumper was hilarious when Stephanie said “I’ll be back.” The audience got a kick out of it too.

@Jacob, looks like that FJ was easier than we thought and we forgot to make allowance for 2 left on top of it. lol.

VJ, you are correct. We forgot to allow for contestants who might not play fj. I clearly underestimated with my 1/3 prediction. In hindsight, I should have predicted higher because “Coptic” comes up at least once a year on Jeopardy and contestants always get it correct. I don’t recall a miss on this religion. I also think the popularity of the Coptic Museum in Cairo may help.

      • VJ says:

Because Stephanie’s name began with an S, I couldn’t help imagining what the game would be like if her name was Sophia. Alex would have had to say ‘Sophia, Loren?’ when Hugh got a miss, and ‘Hugh, Loren’ when Sophia got one.

VJ, the link for the Japanese admiral clue is incorrect, I tried it several times.

      • VJ says:

Ok, Rhonda. I fixed it. No idea how that happened!

btw, this morning I wanted to tell you about the skunk that lives around here but I didn’t have time. So I said well I’ll do when a skunk clue comes up … and one did!

Well, this skunk has been following my daughter’s cat around. 2 days ago she opened the gate because she heard the cat hissing like crazy and the skunk was right there. She said she almost fainted because she was afraid it would spray her but it just wandered away. Late last night, the cat came in the garage and I was there, and I swear he was looking behind him like he was being stalked! lol

        • rhonda says:

          Thanks, VJ.
The kitty seems to have an admirer lol, that is too much! And what are the chances of a skunk clue coming up on the very same day that you wanted to tell me about it?

    • jacob ska says:

Btw, vj I forgot to comment on the “I’ll be back” response. It made me think of Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Terminator.” Loren stayed quiet on that clue. Can’t say I blame him because he shall return. lol

Congrats Loren on your 2-day win.
