TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS L.L. BEAN?

Yankees’ slugger Babe Ruth wrote the words in the clue to Leon Leonwood Bean, founder of the L.L. Bean company. Bean was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He started the company on the proverbial shoestring or, more appropriately, bootlace, when he recognized the need for rubber soled boots. Through trial and error, his company became know for quality and durability. Babe Ruth and other famous people who shared Bean’s passion for the outdoors became personal friends. You can see the entire letter in Ruth’s own handwriting on Twitter.

Aside from being a personal friend of L.L. Bean, Babe Ruth was apparently a regular customer. Just a few years ago, a 1938 check from Ruth to L.L. Bean Inc. in the amount of $7.85 was auctioned off. It says “Babe Ruth” on the left hand side of the check but the Sultan of Swat, whose given name was George Herman Ruth, signed it as “G.H. Ruth”.

Lynn got it right. She bet $2,700 and finished with $8,700.

Xanni went with Eddie Bauer. That cost her $3,200 and left her with $6,400.

Robbi also got it right. He bet $6,600 and won the game with $19,400. Robbi wins the semifinal spot.

I thought Xanni was going to run away with it, after her powerful first round. But, in Double, boy howdy, she looked the part of a second chancer.

Final was on the tip of my tongue, but, I just didn’t get it. I said Lane Bryant, then I said women’s clothes, then I said Eddie Bauer, then I said, “Was he actually a real person?”, and I thought North Face, and said “not a person”, and, then, time ran out.

  2. Howard says:

DDs were tricky, but “hunting” and “shoes” quickly led me to the FJ answer.
My ears may be permanently damaged by Xanni’s horrendous butchering of the pronunciation of “bon mot.”
Very surprised that no one knew about the 90% of German youths. The Belgian region was kind of obvious.

  3. Rick says:

An obvious slam dunk for FJ.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

Xanni didn’t bet 5,000 she bet 3,000 but she got her daily double wrong and that meant that Robbi led going into Final but it didn’t matter because she got Final wrong.
