NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MYCROFT HOLMES?

In “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter,” Sherlock Holmes takes Watson to the Diogenes Club to meet his older brother. Watson’s first impression was “”Mycroft Holmes was a much larger and stouter man than Sherlock. His body was absolutely corpulent but his face though massive had preserved something of the sharpness of expression which was so remarkable in that of his brother. His eyes which were of a peculiarly light watery grey seemed to always retain that far away introspective look which I had only observed in Sherlock’s when he was exerting his full powers.” Mycroft appeared in 3 other Arthur Conan Doyle stories. Read more about that here.

Alex was going for the Karamazov brothers, without specifying one and misspelling it. Trebek had a tough time reading it and Alex wasn’t helping him. LOL!! He didn’t bet anything so he stayed at $4,000.

Katie had Sherlock Holmes who first showed up in 1887. She lost her $4,400 bet, leaving her $3,200.

Rachel had Mario’s brother, Luigi. She lost $1,601 but won the game with the remaining $11,999. Her 3-day total is $54,200.

It seems to never fail that when I think that there’s an incredibly easy Final Jeopardy question, either none of the contestants get it or only one does. Despite that being a trend, it still surprised me that nobody got Mycroft Holmes, though I at least give Katie credit for recognizing that there was a link to the Sherlock Holmes stories. However, she obviously can’t be a Holmes aficionado, because one of them would recognize that Sherlock’s first appearance was in “A Study in Scarlet”.

An easy and marvelous FJ. There are just too many actors who have portrayed Mycroft in radio, on television, in films, in pastiches, over the years. Of note,
however, is a 1950s BBC radio series in which Val Gielgud appeared once as Mycroft and his younger brother John portrayed Sherlock. Val was a novelist (among other things) and Head of Productions at the BBC for 20 years. I believe Stephen Fry once played Mycroft. The “Strand” magazine was a big clue.

Katie had a correct answer of Chucky Cheese, which was actually incorrect because it’s Chucky Cheese’s. Alex also gave an incorrect answer of Captain Crunch. It’s Cap’n Crunch in case no one ever noticed. They were both credited with correct answers. What’s up? Last week someone had money taken away after the break because the judges said they added an “s”. Very inconsistent. However, we love the show! Feel sorry for the contestants sometimes though.

It’s Chuck E. Cheese not Chucky. Alex S. said Captain because that’s how he says it. And I’m consistent.

    How tall is Alex Schindele?

    • VJ says:

I put him at 6′ 6″ based on Marshall Dillon, Cheyenne Bodie, the Rifleman and Daniel Boone. 😀 The actors who played them in the old Westerns were either that height or very close to it.

    • Nullifidian says:

Evidently, he played volleyball for Princeton and his height stat on his athletic page is 6’7″.

Where did Rachel come up with Luigi in Mario bros, VJ? It’s a very comedic response but we are talking about Sherlock Holmes sibling. Has mycroft helped to assist Sherlock in any of his cases in the books or movies? Also I was a little worried that Rachel nearly bet more than 2000 dollars, were you nervous about that as well VJ? I’m glad Alex was smart enough not to bet everything.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I wasn’t nervous or worried about Rachel. I thought she would be the one to get it right. Yeah, she went with a little comedy as opposed to just a blank and I thought it was cute that she thought of that.

Here’s a link to that Tom Jones song. It was very popular. I remember in high school, a group of girls did a choreographed thing to that song in the swimming pool.

I’m pretty sure Rachel’s FJ answer was just a joke she made because she didn’t know the answer, rather than putting a ? or otherwise leaving it blank.
