Final Jeopardy: International Sports (1-21-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/21/2014), in the category “International Sports” was:

Twice the host country, this nation of 4-1/2 million leads the world in total Winter Olympic medals.

Current champ Sarah McNitt has been on a roll and now has a 5-day total of $89,398! Today she is up against these two players: Emily Gadek, from Palm Springs, CA; and Priscilla Emery, from Longwood, FL.

Priscilla found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘C’ the World” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. She was in the lead with $800, $200 ahead of Emily and Sarah, who were in a second place tie. She bet $800 and thought it was Cairn. That was WRONG.

Sarah and Emily finished in a tie for the lead with $5,000. Priscilla was right behind them with $4,200.

Sarah found the first Daily Double in “Bella Italia” under the $1,200 clue. She was in the lead with $9,000, $4,000 ahead of Emily and Priscilla, who were tied in second place again. She bet $2,000 and said Cuomo. That was WRONG.

The last Daily Double was under one of the last two clues in “Poetic License” that went uncovered.

Sarah finished in the lead with $11,400. Priscilla was next with $11,000 and Emily was in third place with $9,400.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS NORWAY?

According to Info Please, Norway is the all-time leader with 313 Winter Olympic medals. The USA is second with 274 and Germany is third with 222. The table differentiates between the Soviet Union (No. 4) and Russia (No. 13).

A clue from last February: OLYMPIC HOST CITIES ($600) Norway has hosted the Olympics twice– in Oslo in 1952 & in this small town in 1994

Emily wrote down Finland, which has never been a host (but that should lessen the pain of giving Sarah the Coleridge clue in ‘Poetic License”). She lost her $9,000 bet and finished with $400.

Priscilla got it right. She added $7,000 and brought her score up to $18,000.

Sarah thought it was Russia. She was obviously hoping the other ladies would bet big and be wrong with her $302 bet, but she finished second with $11,098.

So kudos to Priscilla Emery for her $18,000 victory and for getting that FJ right, a definite toughie, wouldn’t you agree? And not exactly accurate info to go on either, if you didn’t just know it. According to wikipedia (which got its info off Norway’s statistic site — but that’s in Norwegian), Norway’s population exceeded 4.5 million in 2005, and 5 million in 2013. As for 2 time hosts, there’s also Austria, Canada, Italy, Japan and Switzerland, all with populations much larger than Norway.

That was my first thought. It was between Norway, Russia, and Canada, but since Russia and Canada have far more than 4.5 million people, I chose Norway.

easy for a european. most medals for norway come from cross country skiing, not a popular tv event, but extremely popular in norway. not much alpine skiing there due to the lack of mountains. sweden fares a little better in alpine disciplines (svindal, stenmark of yore…). alpine skiing, skating ,hockey and snow boarding (lately) are the most watched events on tv.

again, unconventional bets by both, sarah and priscilla, so i guess we will have to wait for the toc to see if sarah gets in a position to make a “right” wager there. she should make it, being #8 right now, leading #9 by some 20k…..

If I was there, I would have picked one of the Scandinavian countries myself, so I didn’t think Finland was a bad guess either, but Russia, yeah — Moscow alone has a way higher population than 4.5M.

Anyway, I got the Lake Como DD right because I happened to be reading about Cosima Wagner over the weekend (daughter of Franz Liszt and wife of Richard Wagner), who was “born in an Italian love-nest beside Lake Como in 1837.”

I was mad that they didn’t finish “Poetic License.” I thought the poets on the license idea was cute.
