Jill finished in the lead with $14,200. Anneke was next with $9,800 and John was in third place with $7,400.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS PITCAIRN ISLAND?

Thursday October Christian was the son of Fletcher Christian, leader of the mutiny on HMS Bounty, that led to the mutineers eventually settling on Pitcairn Island. Fletcher has most notably been portrayed on film by Clark Gable (1935), Marlon Brando (1962) and Mel Gibson (1984). There’s a memorial to Thursday on Find-a-Grave, along with his somewhat convoluted genealogy. On this Pitcairn Island page, there’s a part under “SHILLIBEER, John” that says Thursday really should have been named Wednesday.

From 2015: LITERATURE OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC ($1200) In “The Long Voyage”, this author mentions Pitcairn Island & Thursday October Christian, Fletcher’s son

John got it right. He bet $4,600, bringing him up to $12,000 even.

Anneke came up with Christmas Island. She bet and lost it all.

Jill wrote down “Bounty,” to at least show she knew what the reference was about. She lost $6,401. That left her $7,799 and made John Presloid the new Jeopardy! champ.

    By the way, the 1935 “Mutiny on the Bounty” film won Best Picture. Here is the post on that with a bunch of clues about it, and some clues about other films of that year.

  2. Alfred Robert Hogan says:

    Really astonishing this FJ was not a Triple Get. Even without the last name this should have been so easy. I have been fascinated with islands since boyhood.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Alfred
      Yes, for many it WAS easy, but in general: geography, history and foreign countries are rather dreaded categories on J. Clean sweeps in those categories – especially when combined- are rather the exception to the rule.

  3. Alfred Robert Hogan says:

    NBC Radio shipped out a small team to broadcast live from Pitcairn Island in 1938. Past Daily, which posts historic recordings from the amazing Gordon Skene Sound Collection, featured one program from the series in 2015.

  4. VJ says:

    There’s another article I came across today in the Telegraph (from 2015) about how no one wanted to move to Pitcairn Island even though they were giving away free land and the temperature never goes below 62 degrees.

    @Phil
    Well, age DOES have it’s advantages. One is that I saw both movie versions several times. read the book as a child…being a history and navy buff does not hurt either. The moment I saw “Christian”, Fletcher Christian popped into my mind. I wonder how John knew, he seems pretty young. He was not even born yet when the Brando movie was shot and released. Overall he was really behind, FJ was his salvation. We’ll see how he will do tomorrow, the ladies seemed to have the wider range today and Anneke certainly had the buzzer figured out by now.

    • Albert says:

      I’m 51 and never saw the Brando movie. I knew the answer because I am studying to pass the Jeopardy test and I was doing research on Islands. I thought the two women would get the FJ right because both are very good players.

      • John B./I. says:

        @Albert
        It’s worth watching imo. Not only good acting, but a true story. And if you are in travel or adventure w/o all the high tech gizmos on the shows you have today ….I enjoyed it very much, even though I saw both versions more than once. So I finally know-got 20 years on you…..

      • VJ says:

        @Albert, if you don’t mind me getting in my two cents, the Clark Gable movie is better. Anything with Charles Laughton in it is better 😀

  6. John Christian Ambion says:

    Anneke Garcia’s reign is over, with John Presloid being the ONLY one who got the FJ! response right, and become the new Jeopardy! champion. The clock is reset ALL OVER AGAIN, and I hope he will flunk out tomorrow.

  7. Dal Higbee says:

    ……..and the search for another 5-time champion continues…………………………………..

  8. Lou says:

    I was hoping annecke will go for her fifth win but it didn’t happen since John dinerstein also had the four day jinx. Let’s hope this new john guy can build a streak. But Still though pitcarn island reminded me of treasure island and the character called long John silver which I hope VJ and John you both heard of? I wonder if there was ever a mutiny in that book? Finally there has been five point and click adventure games that are pirate related called monkey island featuring Guybrush Threepwood fighting ghost pirate leChuck

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      John Presloid? He can’t because his winnings of $12,000 is way small. In my opinion, the amount a contestant who would build a streak cannot be lower than $15,000-$20,000, but with this, I don’t think he could.

      • VJ says:

        @John Christian, aren’t you forgetting that Anneke won Friday’s game with $12,100?

        I hope John Presloid gets a big win tomorrow. I always hope that in these situations.

        • John Christian Ambion says:

          @VJ Yes, I know, but before that, Anneke beat Jessica Holloway by a margin of $1. She finished above my range, but John Presloid, he would be a spoiler and a fluke because his new reign starts lower than that.

  9. John B./I. says:

    @JJ, @Phil, Doris and I left our congrats for Tue on the CotD this morning. (And you 2 got it again today)
    You both mentioned that “Christian” triggered Easter Island?? How so? That was discovered by some Dutch explorer, Jacob Roggeveen, googled it and couldn’t find any “Christian” there

    Anyway, the 4 day jinx got Anneke too. After Jackie’s medical emergency and then Jonathan going out after 4 wins, still no 5 game winner. Figured it would be a low solve affair, but also 2 DDs missed. No comeback for Anneke today and no 5 game winner since October 2018. CONGRATULATIONS to John for his win! Not the biggest payday, but who knows what’s to come?

    I knew it because I read the book when I was 8. Laughton and Gable. I have seen both versions (Laughton, Gable and also the one with Brando and Howard) several times. The book and both movie versions are imo classics AND based on a true story. Bligh’s travel in that boat all the way to Timor… incredible!! 4.000 miles in an open,overcrowded boat. Let’s see how far John can go, he was saved by FJ today, trailing both ladies. Tough for Jill that only “Bounty” came to mind, but: only 1 can win! And Pitcairn is about as remote as it gets….!!!

    PS: I hope they did not get me too in “History of Medicine” today!!!🙄(Fleming).

    • JJ says:

      Thanks for the kudos, John – and to answer your answer your question about how/why Phil & I may have surmised “Easter” to be the island in question (And I hate to speak for Phil, but I’ll give it a go anyway)… We both took note that the boy’s surname was “Christian”. Easter, the last time I checked, is considered a “Christian” holiday, hence the connection. And I also recall reading somewhere that the island was discovered on an Easter Sunday. (I betcha that’s why Anneke said “Christmas”, perhaps?!)
      I knew it was a bad guess when I came up w/ it, but I’d rather go down swinging with a silly answer than say nothing at all…

      • John B./I. says:

        @JJ
        Got it! Isla de Pascua.Never thought of Christian with the other two names as religion, makes sense!! Christmas Island as response then also makes some sense. Just a little remote too (about 200 m. south of Java) but nothing like Pitcairn, in the Indian Ocean and not the South Sea and has about 2.000 people.Pitcairn won’t have anyone left in 20 or 30 years the way things are going. Talk about being in the middle of nowhere! Thanks for the info, appreciate it!!

        • Phil says:

          Hi John, thanks for the kudos as well, and JJ you spoke for me accurately and eloquently. Mamy thanks. I did not get any more detailed than thinking of the Christian holiday, and I had another fortunate guess for the CotD today.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      John Presloid will lose tomorrow. His winnings are TOO low compared to other contestants who finished at least $15,000 and become the Jeopardy! champion.

  10. Richard Corliss says:

    That was ruthless.
