Final Jeopardy: Occupational First Names (1-14-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/14/2014), in the category “Occupational First Names” was:

It’s surging as a job repairing old stone infrastructure, & is 1 of the 5 most popular U.S. boys’ names today.

Current champ Michelle DeGrothy has a 2-day total of $25,900. Today she is up against these two players: Osei Boakye, from Clearwater, FL; and Sarah McNitt, from Ann Arbor, MI.

Michelle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “You Live in a Zoo” under the $800 clue. She was in third place with $1,600, $2,600 less than Sarah’s lead. She bet $600 and said something that sounded like cay-men. Whatever it was, it was WRONG.

Sarah finished in the lead with $11,800. Michelle was next with $8,400 and Osei was in third place with $2,400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right, to the surprise of no one, including Alex Trebek.

WHAT IS MASON?

According to Social Security Administration’s statistics, Mason became a Top 100 American male name for the first time in 1997 when it was the 89th most popular American male name. By 2011, the name rose to the rank of No. 2 and it remained No. 2 in 2012, when 18,856 new male Masons were born. Meantime, its popularity with the girls declined. 80 American baby girls were named Mason in 2012, 75 less than the number of girls given that name in 1997. (More at Best Nicknames: Mason)

Osei bet $2,300. He finished with $4,700.

Mason is a stone worker for sure, but only the sixth most popular boys name.

The SSA lists it at No. 2 (link)

SSA is for 2012, I assume they meant 2013. Google brought up Baby Center for 2013.

Look at Baby Center’s 2012 list, Dick. You’ll see that they have the same results as the SSA in the right-hand column, but in 2013 they only have their own info in the left hand column. The SSA hasn’t published 2013 yet. (Also, Baby Center has already published 2014 results, so those tables can’t possibly be official.)

    1. why did michelle not wager everything? she would have finished with 16.800.00 and

    2. sarah would have been 1.000.00 short for a tie. sarah was lucky that michelle did not bet everything
