WHAT IS THE GUILLOTINE?

Victor Hugo described the guillotine in “Fantine,” Book One: Chapter IV of “Les Miserables”, after relating how the Bishop of Digne helped an unrepentant convict come to terms with his death sentence. The experience had such a profound effect upon the bishop that he took to talking to himself and was overheard saying things like “I did not know that it was so monstrous.”

Here is the quote in French: “La guillotine est la concrétion de la loi; elle se nomme vindicte; elle n’est pas neutre, et ne vous permet pas de rester neutre.”

Clark thought it was liberty. She only lost $5.00, dropping her down to $3,995.

Cory came up with death. He didn’t bet anything so his score remained at $11,200.
