WHAT IS THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY?

For centuries, scholars have debated the origin of the Bayeux Tapestry, a work of embroidery made in the late 11th century as a pictorial homage to William the Conqueror’s conquest of England. Where was it made and who commissioned it? HistoryToday.com lays out the cases for the various theories, including the possible commission by William the Conqueror’s wife, Mathilde of Flanders. The article also indicates that “Varying names were given to the Tapestry…by both English and French scholars,” which included the Tapestry of Queen Matilda. They say the Queen Matilda theory “persisted until the mid-20th century.”

On French Wikipedia: The current article “La tapisserie de Bayeux” says it is also called “broderie de Bayeux” nowadays. They assign past names to specific centuries, saying that “tapisserie de la reine Mathilde” was most popular in the 19th century.

Kristina went with the Mona Lisa. She lost $5,000 and finished with $4,600.

Kyle went with Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. He bet his whole $16,800 and was tapped out.

Yogesh got it right. He bet $7,001 and won the game with $33,601. His 2-day total is $75,202.

No triple stumpers–indicative of a very strong group. I figured at least 2 would get the final.

“Tapisserie” to me was a giveaway, at least to half the final clue. Fortunately I’d heard of the one in question.

I have a feeling we might be seeing Yogesh for quite awhile.

  3. Rick says:

French is certainly not my strongest second language, but the clue in FJ obviously had something to do with a queen. Well, for lack of something better, I went with the Mona Lisa (which I knew wouldn’t fly).

Today was the first regular play game since February 25, 1998 where all 61 clues were both played and responded to correctly. That is something we have not seen in a really long time ago. How many times in Jeopardy history that there were no triple stumpers and all 61 clues have been answered correctly?

Wow. I never picked up on that. That was impressive for tonight as there were some tough questions.
