Final Jeopardy: Notable Americans (1-10-25)
The Final Jeopardy question (1/10/2025) in the category “Notable Americans” was:
Saying he fell in love with his country while a prisoner in someone else’s, he dedicated the rest of his life to public service
It’s the last game for these Second Chance finalists: Drew Goins, a journalist from Honolulu, HI; Sam Cameron, a finance manager from Fargo, ND; and Enzo Cunanan, a student from Orlando, FL.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS JOHN McCAIN?
During the Vietnam War, while serving in the U.S. Navy, John McCain was a POW from 1967 to 1973. McCain went on to serve the State of Arizona in Congress, in the House and the Senate. He recalled his time as a POW when he accepted the Presidential nomination in 2008 at the Republican National Convention, and said: “I fell in love with my country when I was a prisoner in someone else’s. I loved it not just for the many comforts of life here. I loved it for its decency, for its faith in the wisdom, justice, and goodness of its people. I loved it because it was not just a place, but an idea, a cause worth fighting for. I was never the same again; I wasn’t my own man anymore; I was my country’s.
A not-too-old FJ! – “Famous Americans” was the category when John McCain was the correct response in July 2024. There’s some info about McCain’s Jeopardy! history on that recap.
Enzo got it right. His $2,999 bet gave him $5,999 today. Yesterday’s $21,800 brought that up to $27,799.
Sam went with Lafayette. That cost him $7,801 and left him with $8,799. Sam’s $3,400 from yesterday gave him a total of $12,199.
Drew also got it right. He bet $13,201 for a $31,601 finish today. That was already enough to win but his $5,000 from yesterday brought Drew’s final score up to $36,601.
• Actual prizes: Drew $35,000 Sam $15,000 Enzo $15,000
• Drew also advances to Champions Wildcard
A triple stumper from each round:
PLAY ($1000) Before writing & directing “Manchester by the Sea”, he got a Pulitzer nomination for his play “The Waverly Gallery”
TATE EXPECTATIONS ($2000) A 2024 exhibition at Tate Modern of this colorful group had in its title not just Kandinsky but fellow artist Gabriele Münter
2 years ago: ONE of the players left to play FJ! got this clue in “IN THE BOOKSTORE”
The name of this author dead since 2013 now appears on books written by a former U.S. marshal & a former Apache helicopter pilot show

Oh, that’s one I forgot. I think it was a TS, though – about the invaders into the UK. The musical instrument isn’t just one, as they abbreviated it. There is a -horn, and a -ophone; they’re not the same thing.
I did well in the game, but flubbed the FJ. Personally, I wouldn’t have characterized John McCain as being a notable American except perhaps in somewhat negative terms. Anyways, I’m looking forward to Monday’s game!
Not to get political, but, he was the son of a hero, a USNA grad, and was a POW for 7 years, before becoming a US Senator. I would say that that IS rather notable. I don’t know what is negative about any of that.
100% agree. And didn’t his vote save the ACA from extinction?
I was 2/3 on DD but missed FJ. I knew Tennessee Williams, and thought of “blue roses”, but just could not come up with The Glass Menagerie.
As for Final, I just drew a blank.
Now, if you go back, I picked Drew to win it all. But, never fail, my phone stuck it to me. A story pops up when I open the browser on my phone. The TOP story? Drew’s win. Uh, thanks Motorola!
The material in this game seemed a bit tougher than usual. I like it!
So, I picked Will and Drew. If I had to choose, I would say Will to win Champion’s Wild Card.
Oh, and, Howard, I’m 1 hour to the west of Kodak Park. At one time, Kodak had the largest industrial fire department in the world. Last I heard, though, they are down to 4 FF. One of the last chiefs of KPFD was one of my instructors when I was a volley firefighter!
Neat story. I’ve seen “Glass Menagerie” movie and a later TV production. “Gentleman caller” is a key phrase in that play. When I’d answer the phone and a male voice asked to speak to my wife, I’d always tell her she had a gentleman caller. If she answered and a woman asked for me, she’d hand me the phone and say “It’s one of your girlfriends.”
Drew’s home state’s postal code is HI, not HA. Haha!
Daring DD wagers on his part propelled him into a comeback victory. Very rare event–I went 3/3 on DDs but blanked on FJ, which in retrospect seemed easy.
Ouch, they missed my alma mater’s well-known mascot as well as the city an hour to the west. Seriously, no one knew the two “plug” clues? Or the hunting dogs?
So Drew becomes our last Second Chance winner of the season. He will be seen in the third quarterfinal match of Champions Wildcard next Wednesday against Jay Fisher and Aiden Orzech. The Jeopardy website has updated the matchups of Champions Wildcard.
