Final Jeopardy: Countries of the World (1-10-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (1/10/2014), in the category “Countries of the World” was:
It’s the largest country in area completely south of the equator that has a female president.
New champ Seth Tribble won $26,488 yesterday. He goes for a second win today against these two players: Adrian Ho, from Palo Alto, CA; and Michelle DeGrothy, from Neptune Beach, FL.
Adrian found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Should’ve Told You” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $3,000, $3,800 less than Michelle’s lead. He bet $1,500, and thought it was two people: Sacco and Vanzetti. That was WRONG.

Michelle finished in the lead with $7,800. Seth was second with $2,000 and Adrian was last with $1,500.
Michelle found the first Daily Double in “No. 1 ‘Love’ Songs” under the $1,600 clue. She was in the lead in a big big way with $17,400, $13,000 more than Seth in second place. She bet $2,000 but did not know so she was WRONG.

Adrian found the last Daily Double in “Window Quotes” under the $1,600 clue. In third place with $1,500, he had $13,100 less than Michelle’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance, and he was RIGHT when he finally got the whole title out.

Right before Adrian answered this DD, Seth got back $4,000 for a correct answer judged wrong to this clue in “‘Love’ Songs”: Eminem & Rihanna: “Just gonna stand there and watch me cry, but that’s all right because…” Alex told Seth he left out the word “I” in the title “Love the Way You Lie.” But Seth was RIGHT. No point in being nit-picky about Adrian’s answer where he added the article “A” to the Proust title. In French it’s “À la recherche du temps perdu.” That has more recently been translated as “In Search of Lost Time.”
Michelle finished in the lead with an unbeatable $14,600. Seth was next with $6,800 and Adrian was in third place with $3,500.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner is the president of Argentina. She is not the only female president on the South American continent. Dilma Rousseff is the president of Brazil, which is larger in area than Argentina, but not entirely south of the Equator.
Here is a list of Female World Leaders Currently in Power
Adrian got it right and bet $3,000. He finished with $6,500.
Seth also got it right. His $5,545 bet brought him up to $12,345.
Michelle wrote down Australia. She lost $900 and wound up with $13,700 but that was the winning total so we’ve got a new champ yet again.
Michelle totally dominated this game and it looked like a bigger payday for her than that for a while. Well, what can we say? Australia was never in the FJ picture with that clue. If you don’t know why, click on the link above.
Have a great weekend, everyone.

Can someone explain why Australia was wrong, with nearly 3 times the land mass of Argentina, and a woman elected in 2007? I guess because she’s President of the Senate and runs the country rather than just President.
I don’t know if it matters that she’s (was) technically prime minister, but as they pointed out, she’s not *currently* in power anyway.
I would guess this was taped after Julia Gillard was no longer Prime Minister of Australia, but just for the sake of argument — if they ask you for a president, you don’t give them a prime minister.
Thanks. The details can be the devil but she still won. It’s so much easier to answer from my couch at home.
de kirchner was most prominently covered when visiting newly elected pope francis.
cristina (correct spelling) is the second female president of argentina (evita peron the first one) and the first re-elected female president. she is of spanish (father) and german (mother) descent. she followed her husband, nestor, in office (2007 election) nestor died 2010 of a heart attack. nestor kirchner was of swiss/german (father) and croatian (mother) descent. his name should actually have been nestor kirchner de dragnic, since in spanish speaking countries the maternal maiden name is added after the paternal last name. but i guess “kirchner” sounded better than “kirchner de dragic”….
just another proof of the strong european influence in south america, wwII or not…..
Nestor died relatively young (age 60) and she’s had some very recent health issues herself. After the next election in Argentina, the largest country with a female president completely south of the equator could be entirely different (and maybe even harder to figure out).
how about the other way around — completely north of the equator would leave Brazil out too. 🙂
PS – Nestor Kirchner is the middle Nestor on Best Nicknames
