Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl Scores His 100th Point of the Season in Oilers’ 6-3 Victory

Leon Draisaitl scored a pair of goals and teammate Connor McDavid added a goal and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers downed the visiting Ottawa Senators 6-1 on March 14th. Draisaitl, now with 44 goals and 56 assists, reached 100 points for the fourth time in his career. His career highs are 110 points set in the 2019-20 season and tied last year.

With the goal and assist, McDavid now has 129 points (56 goals, 73 assists) and leads the NHL; Draisaitl is second. The Oilers have some other firepower on their roster, like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (31 goals and 51 assists) and Zach Hyman (29 and 43). Edmonton leads the NHL in scoring, averaging 3.88 goals per game.

So with that kind of offensive output, the Oilers should be leading the Western Conference, right? Well, no, they are not. Edmonton is 37-23-8, or 82 points, and is third in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. If the season ended today, they’d have the last Pacific Division berth behind the Vegas Golden Knights (90 points, and leading the Western Conference) and the Los Angeles Kings (87 points). The Colorado Avalanche, third in the NHL Central Division, also have 82 points. Both Edmonton and Colorado have the current Wild Card Seattle Kraken (81 points) and Winnipeg Jets (79) nipping at their heels so at this stage of the season, Edmonton could end up possibly out of the playoffs entirely if they go cold here down the stretch.

While Edmonton leads the league in goals per game, the Oilers also give up a lot of goals, 3.32 per game. While that’s far from the bottom, it is 22nd in the league. Colorado, Seattle, Winnipeg, Vegas, and L.A. all give up fewer goals per game than Edmonton. The Oilers will have to tighten up the defense and goaltending if they are to go deep into the playoffs, or reach the playoffs at all.
