Duets: Bridget Gets Axe, Top 3 Revealed

Well, yes, it was both a surprise and a disappointment to see Bridget Carrington get the axe on “Duets: Superstars’ Choices” on July 12th. The finale is next week and the final 3 are J Rome, Jason Farol and John Glosson, in that order, because it was also revealed that John Glosson got the second lowest number of votes.

So does that mean Duets has gone the way of American Idol and viewers vote for a cute guy over a better singer? Well, you could argue yes and no, we suppose. We will at least point out that Jason is the only one we can genuinely consider an amateur in the Final 3. J Rome and John Glosson are just that good.

We do hope that Bridget doesn’t have to go back to collecting taxes and being on Duets helps her get a career in music. We truly thought she belonged in the Top 3.

Each Top 3 contestant then sang a duet with their superstar and a solo and here’s how that went down:

J Rome

Duet: “Breakeven” by the Scripts. J Rome and Jennifer Nettles delivered as perfect a duet as you can get. It really was impressive. Robin Thicke didn’t think it was going to be right for his voice, but admitted J Rome made it his own, a testament to his talent. John Legend said he’s concluded that everything is right for J Rome’s voice and Kelly Clarkson just loved it.

Solo: “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder. A surprisingly safe and boring choice.

Jason Farol

Duet: “Me and Mrs. Jones,” Billy Paul. This is the song that Jason performed to save himself when it came down to him and Alexis Foster. The audience was just wowed with Jason’s part. Unbelievable, and there was more pandering to the young girls to get them to vote for Jason by having him say he is single. But it was better as a duet than when he sang it solo. Jennifer Nettles commented on his looks and growth. John Legend told it like it is – he doesn’t think it’s a good choice for Jason. Robin said he can see what teenage girls see in Jason. We can’t. He missed the interaction during the performance, where Jason should have been focusing on Kelly with a little naughtiness. Well, that wasn’t the point, Robin. The point was to have him hold the Mrs. Jones notes so the audience could be wowed.

Solo: “Runaway Baby” Bruno Mars. Although his duet was performed second, he was switched to last in the solo round. Purposely to pimp him some more? You betcha.

John Glosson

Duet: “The Prayer” Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion

If it’s not enough to have the show pimping a younger guy’s sex appeal to do John Glosson in on this show, the song choices surely will. John said his voice was magnificent. Robin noticed one note out of key. One note, eh? Really, dude. Picky Kelly didn’t even notice the one note because of his hypnotizing voice.

Solo: “God Bless the Broken Road” Rascall Flatts. Again a ballad but flawless.

After the solo round, Robin said John Glosson sang the best but Jason Farol brought the house down. “That was electric.” John Legend said that’s the right vein for Jason, but if he had to decide right now, he’d sign J Rome. Jennifer wants all their records but Kelly Clarkson thought John Glosson brught the house down vocally and just can’t be any more impressed with J Rome, but she wants her boy Jason to win.

So J Rome looks like the sure bet to win. Does it matter who comes in second and third on Duets?

Well, we have to pick a winner out of three, which isn’t exactly how I would prefer things to go down. I wish they would narrow it down to two, but I guess that wouldn’t make for a very interesting show, would it? Not only am I hooked on Duets, but I’m also enjoying watching because we save so much time since we can watch commercial free now with Auto Hop on PrimeTime Anytime recordings. That makes for a more fun evening and we can watch another show in the same evening.
