Cavaliers Clobbered by Spurs, Fall Out of Top Spot in NBA Eastern Conference

The Cleveland Cavaliers visited the San Antonio Spurs on March 27th in a matchup of two of the NBA’s top teams. Those expecting a tight game between these two powerhouses were disappointed as the Spurs dominated the game and beat the Cavaliers 103-74.

In the last month or so, the Cavaliers have been experiencing something they haven’t had since LeBron James returned to the team– mediocrity. They’ve won just seven of their last 17 games, and while they’ve already clinched the Central Division crown, they are in a four way fight for the top seed in the Eastern Conference with Boston, Washington, and Toronto. With the loss, Cleveland fell a half game behind Boston in that race. Only three games separate those two four teams. The Spurs, who were led by Kawhi Leonard’s 25 points, had a 33 point lead at one point, despite shooting just seven of 26 from three point range. But Cleveland was just four of 26 from beyond the arc.

While the Cavaliers are struggling, the Spurs are keeping pace with the Golden State Warriors for the top seed in the Western Conference. Both teams are 7-3 in their last 10 games, and the Spurs are two games behind the Warriors in what is essentially a two team race for the top seed in the West. The Warriors play at San Antonio on March 29th.
