Brewers Clinch NL Central Title

After enduring a five game losing streak, the Milwaukee Brewers swept a three game series with the New York Mets on September 24th-26th. The win on the 26th clinched the National League Central Division crown, the third Central title for Milwaukee since 2011.

Milwaukee had built up a big lead in the Central race (up by 14 games on September 12th) which was a good thing for them since the St. Louis Cardinals have been in hot pursuit. How hot? The Cards won a club record 16 straight games through September 26th, including four in a row in Milwaukee prior to the Mets series. The Cardinals’ surge has all but guaranteed a Wild Card post season appearance. St. Louis was the preseason pick of many observers to be the Central champs, but until recently, they had been more mediocre than anything else.

Milwaukee will play the winner of the National League East, either Philadelphia or Atlanta, in their first round Division series. The regular season ends October 3rd.

It was quite a day for Wisconsin sports. Up the Lake Michigan coast from Milwaukee at Whistling Straits golf course, the U.S. defeated the European team in the Ryder Cup golf tournament. And on Sunday Night Football, the Green Bay Packers came from behind to beat the San Francisco 49ers 30-28 in Santa Clara, California, 30-28 on a 51 yard Mason Crosby field goal on the last play of the game.
