Beat Shazam Recap: July 29, 2019

Here’s a recap of the July 29th, 2019 episode of Beat Shazam, featuring host Jamie Foxx and his deejay daughter, Corinne Marie. This week, Jamie said to be great at this game you have to know all types of music: “from the Cranberries to Chuck Berry, from Guns N’ Roses to Mack the Knife.” The episode was billed as “Southern Fried Shazam,” apparently because all the teams are from the South.

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Majestic & Sharmeen, two church ladies from Fredericksburg in the Old Dominion (VA)
  • Kayla & Peryl, karaoke-singing cousins from San Antonio in the Lone Star State (TX)
  • Kelvin & Len, 2 brother from Abbeville in the Pelican State (LA)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. WEDDING SONGS: “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” (Stevie Wonder)
VA $0 TX $0 LA $2000
LA took the opening number at 1.91 to 3.06 for VA. TX had “For Once in My Life”
2. 2000s: “Turn Off the Light” (Nelly Furtado)
VA $0 TX $2000 LA $2000
Everyone was right but TX was the only team that came in under 3 seconds
3. ALTERNATIVE: “Ironic” (Alanis Morrissette)
VA $0 TX $4000 LA $2000
TX and VA got this one but TX got it in less than 2 seconds
4. DANCE HITS: “Ridin’ Solo” (Jason Derulo)
VA $0 TX $4000 LA $4000
LA had the only correct title
5. FAST TRACK – BILLY JOEL: “Big Shot”
VA $0 TX $4000 LA $4000
Big bummer (money-wise), no one got it! Everyone went with “Over the Line”

One round down: Kayla & Peryl (TX) are tied at $4K with Kelvin & Len. Majestic & Sharmeen have some catching up to do in the next round.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes went to POP and only one to Rock.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Stitches” (Shawn Mendes)
VA $3000 TX $4000 LA $4000
Everyone got it right but VA finally got on the board with the speediest response: 2.19
2. “Straight Up” (Paula Abdul)
VA $3000 TX $7000 LA $4000
Even faster scores from everyone this time, but TX was the fastest at 1.42. (VA had 1.52. LA, 1.59 – Whew!)
3. “We R Who We R” (Kesha)
VA $3000 TX $7000 LA $4000
Everyone went with “Tik Tok.” At least they knew the singer.
4. FAST TRACK: “You Get What You Give” (New Radicals)
VA $3000 TX $13,000 LA $4,000
It was between TX (2.79) and LA (3.08)

So that was the end of the road for Majestic & Sharmeen (VA). Thank you, Sharmeen, for that amazing rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner.” Kayla & Peryl (TX) have a $9,000 lead over Kelvin & Len (LA). Can the fellas turn that around in the next round? Let’s find out.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: Marvin Gaye
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Let’s Get It On”
TX $13,000 LA $9,000
LA got it at 1.23 to TX’s 1.61.
2. “How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You”
TX $18,000 LA $9000
TX pulled it off this time: 2.68 to LA’s 3.13
2. “Got To Give It Up”
TX $23,000 LA $9,000
TX scores again. 2.12 to LA’s 2.72
4. FAST TRACK: “Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology)”
TX $23,000 LA $19,000
LA had the right title. TX went with “Mother, Mother”

Though each team got 2 songs in that round, Kelvin & Len made a l’il bit more on that last one. So they are now only $4,000 behind Kayla & Peryl (TX). Now we’re going on to the tough stuff.

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Theme from New York, New York” (Frank Sinatra)
TX $33,000 LA $19,000
TX got it 1.61 to VA’s 1.91
2. “My Sharona” (The Knack)
TX $43,000 LA $19,000
TX had the flick of the wrist again, 1.43 to 1.83
3. “Love Song” (Sara Bareilles)
TX $53,000 LA $19,000
TX had the only right title. LA went with “You Don’t Know Me”
4. FAST TRACK: “Pinball Wizard” (The Who)
TX $53,000 LA $19,000
Nobody got it! TX had “Immigrant Song” and LA had “I’m Free”

So painful to see that $20K song go unclaimed! We would have liked to see Kelvin & Len (LA) scoop it up and keep half. As it is, they’re heading home with half their bank: $9,500. Kayla & Peryl (TX) won the right to go on to the last round to take on Shazam.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. The Rolling Stones: “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” – Their answer was “Miss You” so they missed it
2. Divas: “Paparazzi” (Lady Gaga) – Ah! Success! $78,000
3. Country: “Elvira” (The Oak Ridge Boys) – They didn’t know this 1981 Oak Ridge Boys crossover hit and took a shot at it from the lyrics with “Giddyap” (Actually, only the lead singer is from Texas but all the group members are in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame)
4. “R&B” Where Do Broken Hearts Go (Whitney Houston) They did not buzz in fast enough to get an answer in
5. ’90s: “Jumper” (Third Eye Blind) – That must be a favorite because Kayla got right on it. They began the round with $53,000 and finished with $103,000.

Kayla and Peryl can’t play for the million. However, they can still double their money on one last song, if they so choose. If they are right, they will win $206,000. If they play Shazam and lose, they will lose half their money and will take home $51,500. Jamie gave them the category to help them decide: Oldies. Peryl thought that they should take what they had and sally forth. Kayla wanted to play. “Well, Jamie,” she said, “not everyday that you get the chance to win any of these amounts, but I feel like I would really regret it if I walked away without trying, especially with this category so I think I’m gonna play.” So she took on Shazam. Unfortunately, she did not recognize Eddie Cochran’s 1958 hit song, “Summertime Blues” from this lyric “gonna take two weeks, gonna have a fine vacation” and she guessed “Rockin’ Around.”

We truly hope that Kayla has no regrets. She gave it her best shot. Kayla and Peryl won $51,500 and that ain’t small potatoes as game show prizes go.

Sad Music History: Eddie Cochran died in an automobile accident 2 years after hitting the charts with this song. He was only 21 years old.
