Beat Shazam Recap: June 24, 2019

In Beat Shazam’s third season, the promise of the 5th episode is that we will see the most dominant team ever to appear on the show. Let’s join host Jamie Foxx and deejay Corinne for another great hour of the biggest song hits (“from Little Richard to Big Poppa, from Chubby Checker to Slim Shady”).

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Ebony & Jordan, sisters and bartenders from Atlanta in the Peach State (GA)
  • Zane & Josh, best friends and cellphone tower techs from Greenwood in the Hoosier State (IN)
  • Sydnee & Stacey, mom and daughter business partners from San Juan Capistrano in the Golden State (CA)

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. DISCO: “Macho Man” (Village People)
GA $2000 IN $0 CA $0
Everyone knew it in under 2 seconds, but GA came in at 1.50
2. POP: “Gimme More” (Britney Spears)
GA $4000 IN $0 CA $0
Team GA had the only right answer
3. ELVIS: “All Shook Up”
GA $6000 IN $0 CA $0
Everybody got this classic but GA got it fastest at 1.40 seconds. We know who they meant by now, huh?
4. ’80s: “Your Love” (The Outfield)
GA $8000 IN $0 CA $0
GA got the only correct title. These gals are fantastic!
5. FAST TRACK – DIVAS: “No More Drama” (Mary J. Blige)
GA $8000 IN $4000 CA $0
IN and CA got this right. GA hit “Not Gon’ Cry”! And IN got on the board, coming in at 1.50 to 2.53 for CA

Ebony & Jordan (GA) still held the lead with 4 songs right. Zane & Josh (IN) were able to get half of that on the Fast Track. CA needs to get off the schneid in the next round.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! The first two votes went to KARAOKE CLASSICS, so Dance Hits was out for this round.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “Pour Some Sugar On Me” (Def Leppard)
GA $11,000 IN $4000 CA $0
This one was between GA and CA. GA got it at 1.61 to 1.84
2. “Baby Got Back” (Sir Mix-a-Lot)
GA $14,000 IN $4000 CA $0
Everyone knew it in less than 2 seconds. Team GA was incredibly fast on this one, though, at 1.04
3. “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” (Meatloaf)
GA $14,000 IN $7000 CA $0
Only IN got this song right. The ladies all went for “I Would Do Anything for Love”
4. FAST TRACK: “Livin’ On a Prayer” (Bon Jovi)
GA $20,000 IN $7000 CA $0
Team GA had the only right title this time!

The party was over for Sydnee & Stacey (CA) at this point but they had a good time. Ebony & Jordan (GA) have a tremendous lead over Zane & Josh (IN) going into Round 3. As Jamie said, “the money is going to skyrocket,” so there’s still hope.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: No Doubt
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Just a Girl”
GA $25,000 IN $7000
GA won it at 1.46 to 2.57. Josh said that Ebony & Jordan are “straight assassins”
2. “Sunday Morning”
GA $30,000 IN $7000
GA had the only right answer. IN’s answer was “Hella Good”
3. “Don’t Speak”
GA $35,000 IN $7000
GA came in at 1.59 to IN’s 1.71
4. FAST TRACK: “Spiderwebs”
GA $45,000 IN $7000
GA was on it again: 1.07 vs. 1.74 for IN

Ebony & Jordan (GA) cleaned up fo’ sho’ in that round. Zane & Josh (IN) are in a precarious position “no doubt.” Even if they can’t get every song in this last round, it will still be helpful to get as many as possible.

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Barracuda” (Heart)
GA $55,000 IN $7000
That one went to GA with the only correct response
2. “Roses” (Outkast)
GA $65,000 IN $7000
GA got the only right title again
3. “Something to Talk About” (Bonnie Raitt)
GA $75,000 CA $7000
Both teams got this but, yes, GA hit the buzzer fastest: 1.54 vs. 1.73
4. FAST TRACK: “My Girl” (The Temptations)
GA $95,000 IN $7000
GA went another perfect round, getting this one at 1.01 v. 1.12

Zane & Josh (IN) are taking home half their bank– $3,500. You tried hard on that last one, fellas! Ebony & Jordan (GA) were unstoppable in those last two rounds. They will now go on to see how they make out against Shazam, with a million dollars on the line.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. One-Hit Wonders: “Stacy’s Mom” (Fountains of Wayne) – Ebony nailed it! – $120,000
2. Elton John: “I’m Still Standing” – Jordan buzzed in but neither sister could come up with this title.
3. Oldies: “Leader of the Pack” (The Shangri-Las) – They knew this one cold. They used to sing it in the car. – $145,000
4. Party Songs: “Blow” (Kesha) – Ebony went with “Give Me More.” A little deja vu from the first round?
5. Pop Rock: “Meet Virginia” (Train) – They drew another blank on this. They began the round with $95,000 and finished with $145,000.

Now, Ebony & Jordan have to decide if they want to take on one last song for a chance to double their money. If they know this last song before Shazam, they will win $290,000. If they miss it, “however”, they will lose half their bank and “only” win $72,500. To help them make the decision, Jamie gave them the category: “The ’70s.” The ladies did some quick math to figure out if their mom would have enough to pay her student loans if they lost. Ebony & Jordan decided to take the risk-free $145,000. They played the last song just for fun. Ebony heard the lyric “Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul,” and knew right away that was “Drift Away” by Dobie Gray.

Well, that’s surely was a bit of a bummer but Ebony & Jordan were trying to be responsible for the sake of their mother, so it was an admirable decision. Congratulations on a great game!
