American Idol 13: Detroit and Atlanta

American Idol continued this week with two sets of auditions, Tuesday in the Motor City and Wednesday in Hotlanta.

Detroit – January 22

There were several hopefuls who got a second chance to win the judges over when their first try didn’t cut it: Keri Lynn Roche wasn’t going anywhere with “Radioactive” but got her ticket with an “I’d Rather Go Blind” cover. “Fever” from Melanie Porras wasn’t quite good enough but “Wanted Dead or Alive” did the trick. Xavier Calvilla wasn’t that lucky. His pleas for a second chance were shot down, made fun of even, by Harry Connick, Jr. who told him to leave with his dignity. Have to say it — these are the things we find atrocious and unfair.

Marrialle Sellars got the okay from the judges in the biggest way of the night after her performance of Bruno Mars “Grenade”. She got 1/3 of a golden ticket from each judge then a real one and was even told to say she was going to be the next American Idol. WTF? She was also compared to Miley Cyrus quite a bit. Maybe we’re nuts but we thought the smile was more Beyonce. Anyway, there was another girl who got a golden ticket named Symphony, and her middle name is Music. How’s that for a natural Idol name?

Returning from prior seasons were Brandy Neelly and David Oliver Willis, who will both get another shot. Ryan Nisbett’s gimmicky pompadour looks actually impressed the judges as did his rendition of Sarah Mclachlan’s “Angel.”

8 more from Detroit:
Jade Lathan “You know I’m No Good” by Amy Winehouse
Bryan Watts – “So Small” by Carrie Underwood
Malaya Watson – Ain’t No Way” by Aretha Franklin
Khristian D’Avis “Saving All My Love” by Whitney Houston
Ethan Harris – “You’ll Think of Me”
Jena Asciutto – “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele
Jade Lathan – “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse
Sydney Arterbridge – “Loving You” by Minnie Riperton
Ayla Stackhouse – Wing by Little Mix

Atlanta – January 23

We were totes impressed with Majesty Rose and her performance of “Violet Hill,” and wow, we love her name. Remember Symphony? We hope Majesty and Symphony both make it to the Top 10 just on their names. Ryan Seacrest’s mom helped keep her boy in line and gave advice to a contestant to button up his shirt.

Chris Medina brought his dog to the audition because he likes to bring the dog everywhere he goes. Seriously? And Connick had the pooch sit on his lap while Chris sang “Chasing Pavement.” Unbelievably, he got a ticket. Does that mean the dog will go to Hollywood, too?

More Atlanta winners:
Ben Briley, “Arms of a Woman”
Caleb Johnson, “You’ll Find a Way”
Jesse Cline, “Washed by the Water”
Jessica Meuse, “Blue-Eyed Lie” (original)
Lauren Ogborn, “Fancy”
Nica Nashae, “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin

And there will be even more next week. Probably way too early to ask, but when you think it’s going to be narrowed down to 10 (ignoring all other predictions, likes and dislikes), how many do you see not even making the Top 24?
