Alex Ovechkin Scores 600th Career Goal in Washington’s Win Over Winnipeg
Alex Ovechkin scored a pair of goals for the Washington Capitals in their 3-2 overtime win over the Winnipeg Jets on March 12th, and the second one was a career milestone. The second period score was the 32 year old winger’s 600th NHL career goal. Ovechkin is #20 on the NHL all time goal scoring list, and will soon pass #19 Jari Kurri, who scored 601 during his career.
Ovechkin’s goals moved him back out in front of Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine for the NHL lead this season. Alex has 42 while Laine, who scored one goal for the Jets, has 41. The win also boosted the Capitals into first place in the Metropolitan Division with 85 points, one point more than second place Pittsburgh. The Penguins were idle on the 12th. We will see if another fine season by Ovechkin and the Capitals is nullified by an early exit in the playoffs, as has happened the last three years (three second round losses). The team’s fans are still waiting for the franchise’s first Stanley Cup
