Katie got the last Daily Double in “Russian History & Culture” under the $1,600 clue with just one $2,000 clue left after it. In the lead with $13,600, she had $1,600 more than John in second place. Katie bet $1,600 and went with Bolsheviks. That was WRONG.

WHAT IS BARBARY?

Perhaps the word “western” in the clue threw two of the contestants today. It certainly gave me pause when I saw the clue because in my mind, the Barbary Coast extends to Libya. That’s not part of western Africa to me. Check out the maps on this article about The Barbary Wars, covering the Barbary pirates and the young United States’ involvement in the Barbary Wars. Over the years, Jeopardy! clues have covered much of that information.

As for the Barbary ape, one showed up in a video Daily Double on 12/26/2019. Jeopardy! also covered this tidbit in an old clue from 1990: THE ANIMAL KINGDOM ($200) Some macaques have long ones, some have short ones & the Barbary ape doesn’t have one at all

Marti got it right. She added $3,000 to her score, bringing her up to $13,400.

John came up with rhesus after crossing out “bur”. He lost his $8,000 bet and was left with $4,000.

Katie thought it was the bonobo monkey. She lost her $2,000 bet and had $12,000 left. That puts her in a tie with Hester on the Wild Card list. Marti is today’s winner and the second semi-finalist.
