S.A. got the last Daily Double in “Aria Grande” under the $1,600 clue, with 1 clue left after it. In the lead with $10,600, he had $400 more than Courtney in second. He bet $5 and he was RIGHT.

Mental Floss’ list of “15 Things You Might Not Know About Brave New World” mentions a lot of places, incidents and materials that were purported influences on Aldous Huxley in writing “Brave New World”. Per No. 2, Huxley foreshadowed the 1932 novel himself in his first novel “Crome Yellow” (1921) with this passage: ” An impersonal generation will take the place of Nature’s hideous system. In vast state incubators, rows upon rows of gravid bottles will supply the world with the population it requires.” JBS Haldane’s essay, referred to in the clue, was called “Daedalus” or “Science and the Future” and was published in 1924 so it would seem that Huxley already had the idea of babies being hatched in incubators. Perhaps the essay enabled him to flesh out the concept.

Abby thought it was “Metamorphosis”. That cost her $5,600 and left her with $3,800.

Fellow Portlander Courtney came through again in a tough challenge. She’s really good.
There was a get-together this afternoon for former contestants, including VVV from the ToC Finals, but I didn’t go.
Shame on me for not knowing “Brave New World.” I read it in college, but to be honest, that was in 1968.
As for the Iowa DD, Ottumwa is perhaps best-known for being Radar O’Reilly’s hometown on M*A*S*H. If you knew it was in Iowa and that the capital is Des Moines, then you didn’t have to know anything about a river.
Courtney made a great comeback today after that strategic bet by S.A. also I don’t believe that daily double on the midwest was that tough. Although I never have been to iowa I would love to visit that place especially des moines. By the way VJ, do you know if Steppenwolf is science fiction related?

I am from Iowa originally, and Fort Dodge barely rang a bell. I didn’t even know there was a Des Moines river. Very tough.
