According to various online articles (here’s one), coffee breaks began “in the late 19th century in Stoughton, Wisconsin with the wives of Norwegian immigrants.” This is commemorated with the annual Stoughton Coffee Break Festival. In Commonwealth countries, coffee breaks can be called a tea break or just tea and, in Australia, they are “smokos”.
The 1951 article in Time noted “since the war, the coffee break has been written into union contracts”. The following year, a Pan-American Coffee Bureau ad campaign popularized the terms with this message: “Give yourself a Coffee-Break – and Get What Coffee Gives to You.”
Verlinda got it right. She bet it all and doubled her score to $9,000.
Molly went with lunch break. That cost her $7,000 and left her with $2,000.
Tim crossed out happy hour and went with lunch. He lost his $2,800 bet but won the game with $14,400. That made Tim Lopez the new Jeopardy! champion.

Ah coffee break my favorite slogan of the early years. Still though, my dad drinks coffee usually in the early hours, before he commutes to work. Also I am happy to see verlinda getting this one. But tim was smart enough to wager just 2800. Though I think he could build up on his win hopefully. VJ, Rhonda do you guys know if Starbucks or Dunkin donuts ever.used this coffee slogan in the early years? I also wondered if you guys, ever bought coffee while commuting to work previously?
