Final Jeopardy: Classic Movies (1-21-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/21/2020) in the category “Classic Movies” was:

This 1939 film was loosely based on Senator Burton Wheeler, victim of a sham investigation for looking into the Justice Dept.

2x champ Dennis Coffey, a bartender from Old Orchard Beach, ME, has now won $39,202. In Game 3, his opponents are: Steve Schiraldi, a data analyst from Arlington VA; and Samantha Slama, a H.S. English teacher from Los Angeles, CA.

Dennis found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Gravesite Offerings” under the $600 clue on the 13th pick of the round. He was in second place with $1,600, $600 less than Steve’s lead. He bet $1,000, got confused and said Lincoln. That was WRONG.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON”?

The details of Burton K. Wheeler’s investigation of the U.S. Department of Justice and how the FBI conspired to stop it are on Many Things Considered in “Round Up the Usual Suspects.” It eventually led to the resignation of Attorney General Harry Daugherty. (Anyone who has seen “Boardwalk Empire” knows how crooked he was!)

I don’t see anything on IMDB Trivia about how “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939) was loosely based on that investigation, but it does say have two entries that mention Wheeler. One says he walked out of the preview; the other says that is believed to be an exaggeration on the part of director Frank Capra.

Samantha got it right, much to her surprise. She bet $5,400 and finished with $11,400.

Dennis got it, too. He bet $4,801, bringing him up to $12,001.

Steve came up with “Gone With the Wind.” He lost $4,401, dropping him down to $5,599. So, once again, Dennis remained champ. His 3-day total is $51,203.

Steve must have been guessing. Right year, wrong movie.

I never heard of sea bunnies before, those are some odd looking creatures. Good to know that they are not at all related to the Lapin family.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

That sounds faintly familiar. I remember on Jeopardy! Power Players Week in 5/16/2012, in a Video Daily Double, Katty Kay said “Comes” not “Goes”. That cost her $1,000.

Well another great comeback by Dennis despite missing two daily doubles. And I am happy two people got this right. But really, gone with the wind? This is a movie based on the justice department, not the civil war, depiction of slaves and reconstruction era. Was that a guess on Steve, VJ? I am not certain if a fourth win is in Dennis’s favor since he might be showing signs of slowing down a bit.
