Boardwalk Empire Characters: Season One Fatalities

“I’m what time and circumstance have made me.” ~ Jimmy Darmody

Any of the characters on Boardwalk Empire could have uttered Jimmy Darmody’s statement to the Commodore  in “Paris Green.”  We all can say that to some extent, but the Boardwalk Empire characters all have choices, just like us, and they choose to be what they are.  Some of the choices made by Season 1 characters landed them in the morgue, but not all.  Some just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Season Two Fatalities on Boardwalk Empire

Margaret’s husband, Hans Schroeder (Joe Sikora), was pretty nice to the neighbors, bringing day-old bread and stuff, but his abuse of Margaret and confrontation with Nucky about the money Margaret got from Nucky cost him his life.

Big Jim Colosimo (Frank Crudele) was killed because he was going to stand in the way of progress in the bootlegging business.  More obstacles popped up from the Charlie Sheridan gang who sent over their thug, Liam, to hurt a call girl they knew Jimmy Darmody had a thing for.

Liam goes to the brothel and has sex with Pearl (Emily Meade), then he slashes her face and Pearl, unable to deal with the aftermath, commits suicide.   After Jimmy arranges a coup to take out Sheridan’s gang in one fell swoop, Liam (Sean Weil) is fooled into thinking Jimmy understands he was only obeying orders, but  Jimmy has arranged for his new buddy, war veteran and stone cold sniper, Richard Harrow, to shoot Liam from across the street.

In Belle Femme, double-crossing Agent Eric Sebso (Erik Weiner), killed Billy Winslow (Chase Coleman) at Nucky’s behest, the only witness to the murders in the woods to prevent him from testifying against Jimmy Darmody.

In Paris Green, Agent Sebso was killed by his superior, Nelson Van Alden, in a crazy baptism ceremony.  We didn’t mind Sebso offing Billy that much, but more because we hate Nelson Van Alden than because we didn’t want Jimmy to go to jail. We were hoping Sebso would hang around to be a thorn in Van Alden’s side for a while.  Ah, well, at least Erik Weiner got a lot more lines than he did in The Sopranos.

Six of the D’Alessio brother were taken out in Season 1. Jimmy Darmody killed Lucian and Chalky strangled Matteo in the Emerald City.  In Return to Normalcy, Richard Harrow handled Ignatius and Pius; Al Capone took care of Sixtus, and Jimmy added Leo to his body count.

Innocent casualty: The lady on the boardwalk in Belle Femme who was shot when Eddie Kessler thwarted the D’Alessio Brother’s attempt to send a message by killing Nucky’s in a public place.

What about the four members of Rothstein’s gang that are killed in episode one (with a fifth survivor who pops up and dies in episode three)? It sets up the rest of the Season!

There was also a bootlegging driver shot in the last episode’s final montage.
