Final Jeopardy: Notorious (7-18-19)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/18/2019) in the category “Notorious” was:
The death penalty has been carried out only once under Israeli law–in 1962, for this man
New champ Roey Hadar, a journalist from Arlington, VA, defeated a 5x champ yesterday and won $23,600. In Game 2, his challengers are: Amy King, a teacher from Seattle, WA; and Nathan Kaplan, a math professor from Los Angeles, CA.
Round 1 Categories: Sporting Firsts – Lard Almighty – A Tour of Europe – Deep “Pocket” – 19th Century America – The Edgars
Roey found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Tour of Europe” under the $600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,400, $3,000 more than Amy in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Roey finished in the lead with $9,200. Nathan was second with $3,400 and Amy was last with $2,600.
Round 2 Categories: New Group Names of Mythological Creatures – Medical Terms – Comic Strips – “Oy”, the Places You’ll Go! – Stately Overlaps – The 3-named Edgars
Nathan found the first Daily Double in “3-Named Edgars” under the $800 clue, with a dozen clues left after it. He was in second place with $6,000 now, $10,000 less than Roey’s lead. He bet it all and he was RIGHT.

2 clues later, Nathan landed on the last Daily Double in “Medical Terms” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $12,000, he had $4,000 less than Roey’s lead. He bet $5,000 and could only come up with “atopical.” That has 8 letters so it was WRONG.

Roey finished in the lead with $19,600, which was a runaway until Nathan got the last $2K clue in “3-Named Edgars” on the rebound from Amy. So Nathan had $9,800 or half of Roey’s score. Amy was in third place with $7,200.
ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
15 years after World War II ended, Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann was kidnapped by Mossad agents outside his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina and spirited out of the country to face justice in Israel. From the Holocaust Encyclopedia: “Although Eichmann followed the common plea of Nazi perpetrators that he was only following the orders of others, his judges concluded that Eichmann had been a key perpetrator in the genocide of European Jewry. On December 12, 1961, he was found guilty of several of the charges asserted in the original indictment, and on December 15 sentenced to death. On June 1, 1962, Eichmann was executed by hanging.”
From 1999: SPECIAL FORCES ($1000) “By way of deception, thou shalt do war” is the motto of this agency that captured Eichmann in Argentina
Amy bet $2,700, bringing her up to $9,900.
Nathan bet it all and finished with $19,600.
Roey didn’t bet anything, resulting in a tie with Nathan. (Astonished looks all around!) Woo hoo hoo!!
That called for a TIEBREAKER CLUE in the category SCIENCE:
This noble gas is the second-lightest element show
Nathan buzzed in first and he had the correct response. That made him the new Jeopardy! champ.
A triple stumper from each round:

The tiebreaker rule in regular play became effective the first regular-play game after the 2014 Tournament of Champions.
Roey must have faced a difficult decision. Either bet $1 (or $100, or any small amount) and hope either he got FJ right or Nathan missed; or bet $0, hope Nathan missed, and play to win the tiebreaker. (I’m assuming Roey was familiar with the tie-breaker rule.) He chose the latter course which turned out to be the wrong one. He will second-guess himself for years to come, and will be bugged by well-meaning people asking why he wagered $0. (I know that feeling well, because I rang in on a $1000 question (then the DJ maximum) that I didn’t know, got it wrong, and lost by a small amount because of that.
Wowie. The same scenario as the third semifinal of the J! Teen Tournament.
The only thing I have to say to Roey, other than ”Great Job In The Sporting Firsts Category”, is ”WHY DIDN’T YOU GO FOR THE DOLLAR?” You could have won by $1, because you got Final Jeopardy! right, but instead, Nathan prevented the runaway on the last clue, before time ran out, and Nathan beat you on the tiebreaker. GROAN! As for Nathan, the only thing I have to say to him is that compared to 500 Questions, at least, Nathan was sent home with some money on this show. In 500 Questions, Nathan Kaplan defeated Monica Thieu, who made it to 53 Questions, and won $28,000, and already we saw her in the All-Star Games, but because he lost to Ryan Chaffee, and was unable to complete his 1st round, he couldn’t be sent home with any money. Well, at least, winning the tiebreaker, becoming the new JEOPARDY! Champion, and winning some money made up for him losing on 500 Questions, and we’ll see what Nathan does tomorrow on the last episode, before the last week of the season.
What if Nathan got the tiebreaker wrong? Would roey have won by default or would roey have had to answer correctly?
There is 1 strict rule in the JEOPARDY! Tiebreaker, and that is that you can’t win by default. You must respond correctly, in order to win the tiebreaker.
How could that dude not bet anything!!
They also accepted Saturated fats for Triglycerides as the $1000 clue response in Lard Almighty. Roey buzzed in was Saturated, then the other two players gave incorrect responses, so Roey got his $2000 and the other two got the $1000 back they missed. I suspect one of the two Edgars that would have come up in 3-named Edgars would have been Edgar Rice Burroughs(Tarzan author)
For those interested, he was in the J6 clue for the category (they mentioned his name in the clue, and you had to come up with “Tarzan”).
Well it’s great to see another tiebreaker today since early this year and congrats to all the players getting final right. I wished roey had bet it all and won but it didn’t happen. Let’s see how well Nathan does tomorrow. This eichmann guy reminds me of those German nazi forces in wolfenstein. By the way VJ was that game one of the first ones you played in your childhood?
@Lou, my childhood was well over by the time that game came out, Lou.
What a turnaround in that game, eh? My goodness!

There are 6 more games left until the Season Finale. This is the second tiebreaker in a regular play. Nathan buzzed in first with the correct response and win the game with $19,600.
