WHAT IS JURY-RIGGING or JERRY-RIGGING?
In this video (starting at about 0.35), Simon Whistler will give you a lot of information regarding the speculative origins of these two terms, which originally had two distinct meanings and stem from “jury mast” and “jerry built.” I also found separate entries for jury-rigged and jerry-building in “The Century Dictionary and Cylopedia” (1906) on Google Books. Over time, it seems, jerry-built morphed into jerry-rigged and became synonymous with jury-rigged to many folks. During Final Jeopardy!, Alex Trebek indicated that either term would have been accepted for this clue.
A clue from 1998: FILE UNDER “J” ($500) To put together in a makeshift fashion is to jury-rig or to “build” this way
Josh came up with “stopgap.” He lost his $3,601 bet and finished with $8,799.
Allison thought it was “splicing.” That cost her $12,000, leaving her with $4,000.
Charlie got it right with “jury-rigged.” He bet $15,000 and won the game with $32,800. Charles Jorgenson is the new Jeopardy! champ.

What was the short announcement Alex made after a break? All I heard was “it won’t happen again” – I stepped away.
He mispronounced last name of middle contestant as LIT-le instead of LIGHT-el. Since she lost it indeed will not happen again, at least not on JEOPARDY!
Thanks!
Sorry to see Josh didn’t last long today, but splicing? It made me think of gene splicing in genetics. Not sure what Allison was thinking choosing that. Guess those guys must not be familiar with ship terms VJ. Congrats to Charlie on his win. I take it you are familiar with Jerry or jury rigging VJ?
Yes, Lou, I am familiar with that term. I don’t see where splicing was a bad guess. Haven’t you ever heard of splicing things together, like film or ribbon, for instance?
Frankly, I thought it was a stinky clue. lol
