Final Jeopardy: 19th Century Literary Characters (6-26-19)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/26/2019) in the category “19th Century Literary Characters” was:
“Hard and sharp as flint…He iced his office in the dog-days; and didn’t thaw it one degree at Christmas”
It’s the last semi-final game of the 2019 Teen Tournament and these players are competing for the last spot in the finals: Avi Gupta, a senior from Portland, OR; Teagan O’Sullivan, a freshman from Charlotte, NC; and Jackson Jones, a junior from Louisville, KY.

Jackson found the first Daily Double in “Issues of the 2020s” under the $1,200 clue on the 17th pick. He was in the lead with $12,200 at this point, $1,400 more than Teagan in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

6 clues later, Avi found the last Daily Double in “The Laws of Physics” under the $2,000. In third place with $8,800, he had $9,600 less than Jackson’s lead. He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.

Avi and Jackson finished in a tie for the lead. They both had $19,600. Teagan was next with $14,000.
ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
In Stave 1 of “A Christmas Carol” (1843), Charles Dickens gave quite a vivid description of his elderly miser who famously had two words for Christmas: “Scrooge! a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner!” That is followed by the quote in the clue (in its entirety). From 2005: PITHY QUOTES ($400) Scrooge’s 2-word response to “A merry Christmas, Uncle!”
Teagan bet $13,999 and finished with $27,999.
Jackson bet it all and finished with $39,200.
Avi doubled up, too, resulting in a tie with Jackson.
That called for a tiebreaker.
TIEBREAKER: AMERICAN HISTORY: Types of it you could find in Boston Harbor on December 16, 1773 included Souchong & Bohea. show
Avi buzzed in with the correct response first so he won the last finalist spot. We will be seeing him, Lucas Miner and Ryan Presler battle it out for the $100K grand prize in the next two games. (There was a very similar FJ clue in the 10-21-14 game.)

It will be even closer than the finals between Buzzy Cohen, Alan Lin, and Austin Rogers. I’ll be damned.
The pattern keeps going:
2012: Elyse Mancuso Catherine Briley Rose Schaefer
2013: Nilai Sarda Barrett Block Leonard Cooper
2014: Cooper Lair Alan Koolik Jeff Xie
2016: Michael Borecki Sharath Narayan Alec Fischthal
2018: Emma Arnold Claire Sattler Maya Wright
2019: Avi Gupta Lucas Miner Ryan Presler
Of the 2 times where the Finals were all girl finals, both of my picks won: Elyse Mancuso & Claire Sattler. Of the 3 times in a row where the Finals were all boy finals, none of my picks. The 1st time, my pick to win was Nilai Sarda, because we’ve never had a freshman win a Teen Tournament before, but we have had 4 freshmen win the College Championship before, and I thought for sure that we would finally have our 1st freshman to win the Teen Tournament, but things didn’t work out for Nilai, and I’m sure that everybody remembers Leonard Cooper, and his winning moment. The 2nd time, my pick to win was Alan Koolik, because we’ve never had a Teen Champion from the state of Florida… that is, until Claire Sattler. He did seem to be the toughest player among everybody in the Teen Tournament, and I was hoping that he would win, but 1 tiebreaker clue, and getting beat by Jeff Xie ended his run. The 3rd time, my pick to win was Michael Borecki, because he was faster on the buzzer than Alec Fischthal & Sharath Narayan, but trailing for the 1st time in the 1st game of the Finals, missing Final Jeopardy!, and wound up with no money after Day 1 didn’t look so good for him, and not having enough to catch Sharath & Alec’s Day 1 Scores meant that Michael was going home with $25,000 no matter what. However, neither of those times were the 1st time that my pick lost, and I got upset. Either a little bit upset, or very upset. Maybe things will change. As for my pick, I’m torn between Lucas & Ryan. If Avi wins, I will be completely blown away.

I loved this tiebreaker and we are glad that avi will be prepping for the finals with Lucas and Ryan. There was also another tiebreaker back in the 2014 teen tournament. Do you remember the 2009 movie a Christmas Carol VJ? That movie was based on the book by Charles dickens. Good luck to the finalists
I have never seen the 2009 Christmas Carol, Lou.
I was a little underwhelmed by this all semi-final winners game. I felt like it should have been the board for yesterday’s Wild Card players and vice versa. Too easy FJ, too easy tie-breaker

@Lou If Buzzy Cohen, Alan Lin, and Austin Rogers were watching, then they have to see them take their challenge. Of course, this is one of those TT questions that James Holzhauer would’ve answer right if it wasn’t for the schedule.
Thought we never see a tiebreaker, but we did. The last tiebreaker we saw is 3/1/18 and it happened today. Avi and Jackson went into a tiebreaker with $39,200 and Avi won since he buzzed in first with the correct response. That means he will join Lucas and Ryan in the finals for a chance to win $100,000.
The last time we also saw a tie breaker was 2012, 2014, 2007, 1992, 1997, and 1996.
