Jeopardy All Stars: Teams Buzzy, Colby, Brad, Game 1, Part 2 (2-21-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/21/2019) in the category “African Geography” was:

The 7-letter names of these western- & easternmost mainland countries begin with the same letter

The second part of the first game of the 2019 Jeopardy! All Stars tournament featured the remaining 6 members from Team Buzzy, Team Colby and Team Brad, playing the Double Jeopardy! round and Final Jeopardy in a continuation of yesterday’s match.

Repeating the lineups for this 2-day match:
• Team Buzzy: Jeopardy: Alex Jacob; DJ: Buzzy Cohen; FJ: Jennifer Giles
• Team Colby: Jeopardy: Colby Burnett; DJ: Alan Lin; FJ: Pam Mueller
• Team Brad: Jeopardy: Brad Rutter; DJ: Larissa Kelly; FJ; Dave Madden

Here are the results from the Jeopardy round again:

Brad Rutter finished in the lead with $8,400. Alex Jacob was second with $6,600 and Colby Burnett was last with $3,200.

The players in today’s Double Jeopardy round were Buzzy Cohen, Alan Lin and Larissa Kelly:

Categories: Physics – Politicians – First-Time Responses – British Literature – In Perpetuity – Hershey Felder Presents: Great Composers

Larissa found the first Daily Double in “Physics” under the $1,600 clue on the 8th pick. She was in the lead with $14,400 at this point, $7,800 more than Buzzy in second place. She bet $5,000 and she was RIGHT.

Victor Hess showed that certain rays intensify with altitude, so they must be from space; Robert Millikan named them these. show

Buzzy found the last Daily Double in “Politicians” under the $1,600 clue on the 15th pick. In second place with $12,600, he had $10,400 less than Larissa’s lead. He bet $10,000 and he was RIGHT. (Lightning does strike twice for Buzzy after all!)

Before going to the Supreme Court, he made history by winning 3 straight California gubernatorial elections. show

Larissa finished in the lead with $29,800. Buzzy was next with $26,200 and Alan was last with $6,400.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE SOMALIA & SENEGAL?

Dakar, the capital of Senegal is the westernmost city on the African mainland. Ras Hafun, a promontory in Somalia, is the easternmost point in Africa. Click here for more extreme points of Africa.

The remaining team members took over for Final Jeopardy:

Pam Mueller wrote down Morocco & Mozambique. Too long on that second one. She bet it and lost it all. Team Colby is at zero now.

Jennifer Giles wrote “I love you Grandma.” She didn’t bet anything so she wasn’t sweating a wrong answer. Team Buzzy remained at $26,200.

Dave Madden got it right. He bet $20,000, bringing Team Brad’s score up to a hefty $49,800.

Final Jeopardy (2/20/2019) Jennifer Giles, Pam Mueller, Dave Madden

Two triple stumpers from the round:

PHYSICS: Physicist James gave his name to this law saying heat from electricity is proportional to the square of the current

FIRST TIME RESPONSES: This white anesthetic called “Milk of Amnesia” was involved in the death of Michael Jackson

You may be happy to know that these teams will bring us a regular game tomorrow. The cumulative total of the two games will determine who advances to the finals automatically. Right now, it’s looking good for Team Brad.

2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Shakespeare Characters”

About himself he says, “Since the heavens have shap’d my body so, let hell make crook’d my mind to answer it”. show

What is the name of the classical pianist that played different selections on Feb 21st ?

    • VJ says:

@Elaine, his name was in the category title (they are listed in the recap) —

      Hershey Felder Presents: Great Composers

  2. Richard Corliss says:

The winning team will split $1,000,000
The second place team will split $300,000
The third place team will split $100,000
The wildcard match teams will split $75,000
The first eliminated team will split $50,000

    Random thoughts I had today:

I wondered if they ever had that First Time Responses category before and the only one I found on J-Archive was in the first final match of the 2017 ToC with Buzzy, Alan and Austin. They also had a triple rhyme time category in there.

I also wondered why they didn’t have a harder clue than how to say “why” in French. How about “brown cow” and then Alex could have said “How now brown cow” in French

I transposed two letters in Colby’s name at one point and it came out Cobly and I wondered if he ever gets mail like that, the way people named Brian get mail that says “Brain”

Also who remembers the 6-letter African countries FJ in Alex Jacob’s semi-final match in the 2015 ToC with the famous (or infamous depending on one’s pov) What is Aleve? response in FJ

  4. John Christian Ambion says:

Wow, Game 2 of the All-Star Games became a toughie. I mean, “begin with the same letter” sounds considerable, but “7-letter names” is tough because there are some African countries that have that amount. Pam wrote down Morocco, but Mozambique? Too much.

    • VJ says:

The only 7-letter African countries that start with the same letter are Lesotho & Liberia, Senegal & Somalia

The rest: Algeria, Burundi, Comoros, Eritrea, Morocco, Nigeria

  5. JP says:

I almost jumped out of my chair when they asked for the German word for “love dream” in the classical music category. I’ve been practicing that song, Liebestraum No. 3 in Ab major, on the piano off and on for a year. One of my favorite pieces.

  6. Lou says:

Well not a very tough final jeopardy here though I just hope team colby could at least improve their score a little bit If they want to advance to the finals. But still 26000 from Jennifer Giles is looking good right now for the wildcard spots.

By the way VJ and John what made Pam put Mozambique and Morocco? They were looking for S countries not M countries.

    • JP says:

That they were looking for “S” countries was not included in the clue. I’m guessing she thought Morocco was the Westernmost country (a decent guess), and then picked Mozambique because it was on the East side, even though it didn’t match the letter count.

    • John B./I. says:

“S” was not in the clue. You HAD to know either Somalia or Senegal in order to come up with the right letter “S” which then would probably have led you to the correct other country. Looks like Dave knew at least one and was drawing the right conclusion or he knew both from the beginning. Good for him!!!

  7. VJ says:

I wouldn’t have answered that Milk of Amnesia clue today either even though I knew what it was (fear of mispronunciation 😀 )

I watched the How It Works video again and Alex said “No player gets to compete in the same round more than once in each match”. I totally misunderstood that before (sleep deprivation). So now I see that Alex Jacob can get a DJ round for Team Buzzy and I feel better.

I should say, a little better. Larissa Kelly seriously kicked butt today.

    • John B./I. says:

      @VJ
She did, (going past eight words) and then Dave added a nice exclamation point….
only one to get FJ right with a big bet to boot. Congratulations to Dave and Larissa! Also to Brad who laid the foundation yesterday.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@VJ The clue should be before “Game 2 of the 2019 Jeopardy! All Stars tournament…”

      • VJ says:

well, I don’t want to call it that. It’s really not a second game – it’s the other half of the first game.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

It looks like captain Brad Rutter doesn’t love to share the money.

  9. John B./I. says:

I think the format of this “tournament” is disruptive to the flow of the game(s) and may tend to result in unusual and deceiving end results. As for the game today: not a very tough FJ, when you just know ONE country then you know the letter the other begins with “S” PLUS that it has seven letters. Yet not exactly a stellar FJ result (pun intended). I’ll just monitor the results and will watch only the 2 final games (March 4/5).
