Final Jeopardy: European History (10-26-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/26/2018) in the category “European History” was:

Legend says this, weighing 336 lbs., came from the Holy Land & Kenneth MacAlpin brought it to Perthshire c. 840

New champ Dhruv Srinivasachar, a medical & doctoral student from Virginia, won $17,800 yesterday. In Game 2, he is up against these two players: Tori Campbell, an attorney from Chicago, IL; and Todd LaPlace, an accountant from Dublin, OH.

Round 1 Categories: 1984 at the Movies With Leonard Maltin – Relationships – Presidential Firsts – Not to Be Confused – Animal Oddities – Starts or Ends With a Body Part

Dhruv found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Presidential Firsts” under the $1,000 clue on the 16th pick, right after the chat. He was in the third with $1,600, $1,000 less than Todd’s lead. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

In 1896 he became the first to use the telephone during a presidential election campaign, often calling GOP HQ. show

There was one reversal in this round during the chat (see below).

Tori finished in the lead with $5,800. Todd was second with $4,400 and Dhruv was last with $3,200.

Round 2 Categories: Aviation History – People – Grammy’s Album of the Year – Fiction – You Go Norway – We’ll Go “R”S

Todd found the first Daily Double in “Fiction” under the $1,200 clue on the 13th pick. He was in the lead with $7,600 at this point, $1,000 more than Tori in second place. He bet $1,000 and went with “Heart of Darkness”. That was WRONG.

In this novel it’s Doc Daneeka who explains “Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn’t really crazy” show

Tori found the last Daily Double in “People” under the $2,000 clue, with 8 clues to go after it. In second place with $10,600, she had $400 less than Todd’s lead. She bet $2,000 and got the post right but the place she came up with was WRONG.

In 2016, Carla Hayden became the 1st woman and 1st African-American in this D.C. post and, naturally, was sworn in on a book. show

Todd and Tori finished in a tie for the lead with $11,800. Dhruv was hot on their heels with $10,800.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE STONE OF SCONE or THE STONE OF DESTINY?

Transceltic.com has a history of the Stone of Scone, with a nod to legend: “It is thought that Cináed mac Ailpín commonly anglicised as Kenneth MacAlpin (King Kenneth I, 810 – 13 February 858) brought the Stone of Destiny to Scone.” They explain that it “was historically kept at the now-ruined Scone Abbey in Scone (Scottish Gaelic:Sgàin), near Perth (Peairt).” The Scone of Stone is also called the Coronation Stone and, due to the biblical connection, Jacob’s Pillar or Jacob’s Pillow.

The last FJ! clue with the same response was on 7/3/2014. It was about the theft of the enormous “Famous Object.”

Dhruv wrote down Excalibur. He lost his $10,799 bet and had a buck left.

Tori wrote down “what is the rock on which Kings of England sit on the throne.” That proved you could write quite a bit in 30 seconds but cost her $9,602. She finished with $2,198.

Todd thought it was the Rosetta Stone. He bet and lost it all. So Tori Campbell became the new Jeopardy champ. She’ll be back on Monday to try to augment that $2,198!

Final Jeopardy (10/26/2018) Dhruv Srinivasachar, Tori Campbell, Todd LaPlace

2 triple stumpers from the “Fiction” category:

FICTION ($800) His first novel, “Ready Player One”, became a bestseller & a Spielberg movie

($2000) One of Britain’s great mystery authors, she went back a couple of centuries for “Death Comes to Pemberley”

    The only thing I could come up with for the Final was Stone of Scone, but I thought I was completely wrong. I thought the Stone of Scone is nowhere near 336 pounds, but much lighter.

  2. Richard Corliss says:

    Tori and Todd both had $11,800. Tori went first in Final Jeopardy! because she was leading at the end of the Jeopardy! round.

    • VJ says:

      Actually, Richard, Todd had $11,800 before Tori got there so Todd was considered the leader. That’s why her FJ! response was revealed after Dhruv’s. They always reveal the leader’s FJ! results last.

  3. Marilyn says:

    I just watched. I think $1001 would have been a smart wager for Dhruv. I did not understand Tori’s wager.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Marilyn
      Todd and Tori should have normally bet it all, going for a win, a total loss or a tiebreaker. I can only make sense out of Tori’s wager when she thought it will be a TS (European Geography) and was hoping everybody would go all in and she would be left with a little to win. And that is exactly what happened.
      Dhruv had a strange bet yesterday already…So had Jill and Hannah. Didn’t matter though, since Dhruv was the only one who got FJ right.

      • John B./I. says:

        @Marilyn, What I wanted to add is that hindsight is of course always 20/20. No player wants to admit it might be a TS… It may be a category that sounds difficult, but then the clue is easy (or vice versa)> Would not be the first time that happened in J,JJ or FJ….

    @VJ
    Judging from the numbers – with 2 K lost net with the DD- and your recap not many triple stumpers, so that’s the upside for today! Too bad they threw them such a tough one for FJ. We could have even had a tiebreaker question…..Kind of ironic that Tori won just $198 more than Dhruv today. How about setting the limit for a win at 5K?? What do you think? Wouldn’t exactly bankrupt Sony.

  5. Lou says:

    So we finish the week with one final jeopardy triple stumper, two reversals, and a contestant with just a few bucks shy of 2200 dollars. Dhruv must be thinking of the sword and the stone disney cartoon and king Arthur since that is where Excalibur originated from.

    I laughed at Tori’s response but still she should have bet zero. Anyway a win is a win even though we need her to win big next week before the teen tournament starts. The toc has not changed so the four three time winners are still safe.

    • VJ says:

      I just wish that they would vet their clues just a bit better and give Alex the alternative (or right, as the case may be) answers if they insist on using the clues with multiple answers.

      On FJ, I guess we’ll never get to see whether Stone of Destiny, the Coronation Stone, Jacob’s Pillar or Jacob’s Pillow would be accepted. But I would like to see that with 3 different answers and they had to accept them all.

        @VJ
        You are right. They wouldn’t break a leg if they briefly said “We also would have accepted……” since the Stone of Scone is known by several different names !

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou, Exactly, you said all I wanted to say. Just that Excalibur is a myth and even if it were real, it would be uncomfortable to sit on, especially when it is vertical 😏 and the Rosetta Stone is almost 1000 years off. Tori was at least close, since Edward I. almost all english then British monarch were crowned in Westminster Abbey, the Stone of Sconce placed underneath the seat of the “coronation chair” to symbolize that the King of England is also the King of Scotland.

      But as you said, a win is a win, so CONGRATULATIONS to Tori for getting so close and for WINNING the game.
