Texas Beats Oklahoma 48-45 in Wild Red River Showdown Shootout

One of the great college football rivalries is the annual Red River Showdown between Texas and Oklahoma, played every year at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. This year’s game was the 113th in the series that dates back to 1900, with Texas leading the series 61-46-5. This season, both teams were ranked in the Top 25, with the Longhorns (2-0 in the Big 12, 4-1 overall) at #19 and the Sooners (2-0, 5-0) at #7, and the game was an important one in the Big 12 Conference race.

Not only was it an important game between two traditional rivals, this year’s matchup proved to be an entertaining game as well. If you like lots of scoring and offense, this game did not disappoint. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns, and he also rushed for 92 yards and another touchdown, but it came down to a 40 yard field goal by Longhorn freshman kicker Cameron Dicker with nine seconds left that gave Texas a 48-45 win.

Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger had a fine game himself, throwing for 314 yards and two touchdowns. Texas led 45-24 going into the fourth quarter, but Murray engineered three touchdown drives to tie it before Ehlinger took the Longhorns 52 yards on the final drive to set up the winning field goal.

West Virginia beat Kansas 38-22 to improve to 3-0 (5-0 overall), tied with the Longhorns (3-0 conference, 5-1 overall) for 1st place in the Big 12. Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will play at Texas on November 3rd, and will host Oklahoma in their final regular season game on November 23rd.
