It Was Upset Saturday for Several Ranked Teams in College Football

A number of college football teams ranked in the AP Top 25 took it on the chin from unranked teams on September 23rd.

Perhaps the most notable upset was in Norfolk, Virginia where Old Dominion beat # 13 Virginia Tech 49-35. The Monarchs are members of Conference USA, and have only had a Division I football program since 2009, yet backup quarterback Blake LaRussa passed for 495 yards and four touchdowns to defeat the perennial ACC football power. It was Old Dominion’s first win of the season. Virginia Tech fell completely out of the Top 25 with the loss.

Another ACC team, # 23 Boston College, lost to 0-3 Purdue 30-13. It was BC’s first time in the Top 25 since 2008, and the stay was brief.

In the SEC, Kentucky improved to 4-0 with a 28-7 win over #14 Mississippi State. The Wildcats beat then #25 Florida a couple of weeks ago, and the two wins over ranked teams moved Kentucky into the Top 25 (at # 17) this week for the first time since 2007.

In the Big 12, #17 TCU lost to Texas 31-16, to drop to 2-2 on the season. TCU fell out of the Top 25, while Texas (3-1) moved up to #18. Also in the Big 12, #15 Oklahoma State (3-1) lost to Texas Tech 41-17. The Red Raiders entered the Top 25 at #25, while the Cowboys dropped out. Texas Tech will have another challenge right away, hosting #12 West Virginia on September 29th.
