Final Jeopardy: Famous Names (7-26-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/26/2018) in the category “Famous Names” was:
Almost 100 when he died in 2018, this No. Carolina man became just the 4th private citizen to lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol
New champ Burt Westermeier, a PhD candidate from Connecticut, won $14,401 yesterday. In his second game, he is up against: Ian Flynn, a copy editor from New Hampshire; and Rick Terpstra, an aspiring English teacher from Pennsylvania.
Round 1 Categories: For Me & My Gal Gadot – Saints on Earth – No S Ending! – Potpourri – Anti Up – Deal the Cards
Rick found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Saints on Earth” under the $800 clue on the 16th pick, right after the chat. He was at zero before the chat but gained $2,000 on a reversal (see below). That put him in second place with $800 less than Ian’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.
This river flows into the gulf of the same name northeast out of Lake Ontario. show
Ian finished in the lead with $6,800. Rick was second with $6,200 and Burt was last with $3,800.

Rick found the first Daily Double in “P.G.” under the $1,200 clue on the 13th pick. He was in second place with $9,800 at this point, $1,400 less than Ian’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.
It’s also called the hypophysis because it lies under the brain. show
Burt found the last Daily Double in “It’s a Jungle Out There” under the $1,600 clue. There were 4 clues left after it, worth $2,400. In second place with $10,600, he had $1,000 less than Rick’s lead. Incredibly, he bet $1,000. He was RIGHT and in a tie with Rick.
In 1951 an Airstrip was cut in the jungle near this nation’s Mayan ruins of Tikal. show
Rick finished in the lead with $12,800. Burt was next with $11,600 and Ian was in third place with $9,600.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
The Rev. Billy Graham died at the age of 99 on February 21, 2018. Here’s an excerpt from an NPR.com article, published the next day: “The public viewing for the internationally famous spiritual leader who is credited with changing the face of evangelical Christianity in America, was arranged by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., and Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Both Republican leaders will deliver remarks. It is a rare privilege for civilians to be honored in this way, a distinction that usually is reserved for presidents or members of Congress, although they technically lie ‘in state.’ The practice changed in 1998 when Congress voted to recognize two Capitol Police officers who died in the line of duty.” In 2005, civil rights activist Rosa Parks was similarly honored.
Given the issue of separation of church and state, it is not surprising that there was some backlash over according Rev. Graham this rare honor.
Ian wrote down “Armstrong.” He lost his $3,300 bet, leaving him with $6,300.
Burt got it right. He bet it all and finished with $23,200.
Rick got it right, too. He bet $10,401 and won the game with $23,201. Rick Terpstra is the new Jeopardy! champ. He will close out Season 34 with us tomorrow.
Reversal – POTPOURRI ($1000) Begun as an alternative to SMS messaging & now part of Facebook, it helps a billion people keep in touch – Rick said “Messenger.” They wanted “WhatsApp.” During the chat, Rick’s response was okayed and he got $2,000.
Both of these triple stumpers are from Double Jeopardy!
THE 16TH CENTURY ($1600) He ruled the Spanish Empire at the height of its power
THIS CATEGORY IS “P.G.” ($2000) Now a museum, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni in Venice houses the art collection of this American heiress
2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Names in the News”

Does anybody else think a missed DD is a waste because the other two players can’t take a shot? I think, for example, if a player misses a DD valued at $1,600 then the other two players should be able to buzz in for the $1,600 amount.
I sure don’t, Albert. The DDs are game changers to me, kinda like Wild Cards .
I won’t play War with anyone unless deuces and one-eyed jacks are wild.
What about having two DDs on the first Jeopardy board, instead of just one as it is now.
I would love it but I don’t think they would do it — isn’t it what makes the second round “Double Jeopardy”?
Think of it: not considering the 2 tournament winners we have only 6 players with 4 or more wins (7 the most) and seven 3 game winners. And 7 games – with all respect to Josh and Ryan- are not exactly major streaks. A major streak – at least for me- starts at 10 or 11. So we have more 3 game winners at the moment than 4+ game winners….we’ll see if a player can exceed the 7 games come September. But then that would also be good news for Scott and Dave, also Ali, because it would eat up a lot of time and produce only one contestant overtaking them.
Wow, Burt’s performance yesterday came as a fluke today, that means tomorrow will be the final episode for Season 34 and it will start all over again. I agree with John that this season is rather jinxed because there are some attempts trying to make it big, but those opponents put a stop to it. VJ, I have two questions to ask you, when will Season 35 start airing, and was Billy Graham really controversial in some sense?
Season 35 will begin on September 10th, 2018 and I agree this season has been jinxed with the opponents having flukes, making it harder for streakers winning five games or more. I really wonder if we will have another 12 or 13time winner this year?
@John Christian and Lou — I’d say it’s all a matter of perspective whether there’s a jinx 😀 From Rick’s pov, he had fantastic luck today. He got that reversal right before he picked the first DD. Otherwise, he would only have been able to bet the $1K allowance. And then Burt left it wide open for him to gain the lead going into FJ.
@John Christian — everyone who is famous has both fans and detractors. Here’s a link to another article that brings up some things about Graham that rubbed some folks the wrong way. It’s not long. As for myself, I was raised Roman Catholic and never paid much attention to him.

Ian might have been think of Neil Armstrong in the final jeopardy response but still though what is the difference between whatsapp and messenger VJ? Have you ever used Facebook messenger to chat with friends you know? Furthermore, congratulations to Rick. Two people getting this right is better than triple stumper on final. We shall see if Rick can win his second game before the six week break starts. So far, the past few season finales and premieres have had only one game winners except for Jared Hall since he was the only one winning his second half of the 3 games adding to the three games won before in the summer.
@Lou, the only time I use chat online is when I have to deal with customer service about something because I hate talking to them on the phone
So Dave was the last to qualify for the ToC- at least at this point. J would need at least seven 4 game winners to bump Scott off. I don’t see that happening. We will even see Dave and Ali in the ToC. Provided they have it in November… We have only the 2 tournament winners, two 7 game, one 6 game, two 5 game and one 4 game winners so far.(8 total). This season is rather jinxed, especially in the last 2,3 months.
Burt blew it by not wagering enough at the last DD. $ 2.500 would have sufficed.
Well, at least 2 got FJ, better than zero.
Well, we’ll have to find out on the Jeopardy! website after the Season 35th premiere episode goes by.
Well, we’re coming down to it.
Yes, and even IF they pp the ToC in November, you have then the xmas break, so it could take a while until all 15 contestants for the ToC have 4 wins or more. Could go into April the way things are unfolding this season.
