From Funding Universe: “QVC Inc. is the nation’s largest electronic retailer, selling a wide variety of merchandise that includes clothing, jewelry, cosmetics, electronics, housewares, and toys. The company sells its products through cable and satellite television, QVC.com, in outlet centers, and via a retail store in the Mall of America….. QVC, which stands for “Quality, Value, and Convenience,” grew quickly into an industry powerhouse during the late 1980s and early 1990s due to increases in cable subscription rates, consumers’ growing dependence on mail-order shopping, and advances in telecommunications….” If you’re ever in the West Chester, PA. area, you can take a tour of the QVC studio for $10 per adult and $8 per child.

    This is the 25th game of Season 34 to have a contestant win $30,000 or more (all games of Season 34).

  2. Albert says:

    I really don’t like to see 3 men or 3 women on the same show. Certain times men have an advantage on certain categories and questions, and women have the same advantage on other categories and questions.

    For example, I am a 51-year old man who immediately knew the ‘Joe Louis’ Triple Stumper. Just one small example where a man knew an answer because, generally speaking, women just aren’t into boxing history.

    • VJ says:

      @Albert, well, I’m a woman and I got the Brown Bomber clue. Boxing is the one sport that I do know something about — several years ago, I wrote this post about Boxing Nicknames:

      Kid Chocolate was No Bon Bon

      • Kevin S. says:

        Those of us who are really old may remember NEVER get into an argument about boxing with Dr. Joyce Brothers.

        • Albert says:

          I had a feeling somebody would bring that up about joyce brothers and boxing

  3. Richard Corliss says:

    Hot! Lauren is on fire. This girl is on fire. (sizzling sound)

    • VJ says:

      @Richard, wouldn’t it be something if Lauren won as many games as Julia Collins after you said that?

      I still remember Julia’s tweet about how they played “Girl on Fire” when she was walking off the stage after her 20th game.

  4. VJ says:

    @John, idk what you mean you “also got the single HBS yesterday.” You didn’t get it today — your prediction was ZERO. Just because Beth didn’t get it doesn’t mean she’s never heard of it, for heaven’s sake.

    And btw, Lauren definitely looks under 40.

    • John B.I/I. says:

      @VJ
      Yes, but I was the only one who predicted ONE for HBS, while everybody else went way higher. Nobody noticed though. I was correct YESTERDAY.

      • VJ says:

        Yes, I did notice. In fact, I wrote congratulations to you in part of my recap comment to John Christian but I cut it out because I intended to post it directly to you. Then the computer hijackers showed up and I lost track of it. I didn’t congratulate you this morning because by then I thought I had already posted it, so sorry about that — congrats on yesterday. It was a shocking result indeed.

        • John B./I. says:

          @VJ
          See? As I said: just because WE know it……there is no shortage in terms of surprises with J!
          And thanks for the congratulations, and have a nice weekend too! I see it is as hot in Houston as on Maui !!!

        • VJ says:

          Actually, it’s been raining a lot off and on the past few days and it’s pretty cool here right now after it just rained cats and dogs.

          There was a sudden downpour last night with strong winds and lightning. Pretty scary!

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

    Wow, it has been a long time since we have a champion NOT making it to FJ because of the negative score, similar to the Kristin Sausville incident. What’s even more shocking is the fact that Belgium knocked powerhouse Brazil out of the World Cup. I have a feeling that England fans will make their dream come true: football’s coming home.

    • John B./I. says:

      @John Christian
      Unfortunately Belgium has a better chance to win the WC. Reason: Only 1 player in their team plays at a Belgian club. And England has de facto NEVER won a WC. 1966 was a wrong decision. The ball for the 2:1 for England never crossed the line. Anyway, all Teams left are European. South America is out with everybody else. I would LOVE England to win, but….well, stranger things have happened.
      Watching soccer several hours each week my feeling is: Belgium will win.

      • John Christian Ambion says:

        How come 1966 was wrong? I’m afraid England WON the World Cup that year, and by the looks of it, it’s going to be England v. France in the final, and Belgium v. Russia in the semifinals.

        • John B./I. says:

          @John Christian
          Yes, they won the WC officially, but the goal for the 2:1 for England should never have been allowed. But then you had no replay, the main referee was Swiss, Mr. Dienst, (German,French), the linesman was Russian (Azerbaijan), Mr. Tofiq Bahramov. The second linesman (not involved) was from Czechoslovakia. They talked in sign language. Today all referees and assistant referees have to be from the same country, plus you have VAR etc.
          Because the goal was allowed, then Germany equalized 2:2 which sent the game into extra time and England won 4:2. Allegedly the linesman later said: “That was the revenge for Stalingrad….” There is a stadium named for him in Baku… So Germany should have won 2:1 in regulation. Just for clarification: I do NOT like the Germans (except Bavarians) and I am a die hard Liverpool fan. But fair is fair. They dissected that play again and again with today’s techniques and the ball hit the goal line but never crossed it.

        • John B./I. says:

          @John Christian
          IF England makes it to the final, they’ll play Belgium and Belgium -such a small country where the clubs play no role in the Champions- or Europa League- will win.
          Care to bet a Mai Tai??? :):):)
          As I said, all Belgian national team player play in leagues like Spain,England,Germany,France, Italy…Only ONE plays for Anderlecht.

  6. Lou says:

    You know, after watching Marilyn’s performance, VJ, I am just disappointed. Furthermore, I thought she was some sort of a tournament of champion material. Do you remember Kristen Sauseville? She was playing final jeopardy alone after her opponents were eliminated due to negative scores. Seriously though what happened today?

    Also, do you watch Shark Tank? Lori Grenier is the queen of QVC so she has made billions in her company. Plus what sort of products have you bought from QVC? Have a great weekend VJ and John. Congrats to Lauren, I know she can turn things around hopefully by next week.

    • John B./I. says:

      @LOU
      Same to you, enjoy the summer!! Hope it’s not too hot where you are.
      Btw is it “LOU” or “Louis”, what do you prefer??? Since you have the same avatar I guess you are one and the same???
      Aloha!!!

      • Louis says:

        @John, either name is fine but yeah I guess we do have the same avatar. Yes I am one in the same. By the way my family and I traveled to Hawaii in 2005 had a great time there. Alpha to you.

        • John B. /I. says:

          @Lou
          Then chose Louis XIX, the new “sun king”. The XIX would have been the next French Bourbon king….:):):)
          Like my John B./I. stands for John I., King of the Cannibal Islands…..
          gotta tease people a little sometimes!

    • Richard Corliss says:

      Kevin O’Leary A.K.A. Mr. Wonderful didn’t do so well on Celebrity Jeopardy! even though every celebrity is a winner every time they play for charity.

    • VJ says:

      Lou, It looked like Marilyn just couldn’t get a buzz in edgewise today and the ones she got in, more were wrong than right. Must have been frustrating!

      It really looked like Lauren was going to run away with it big time by the end of the first round, didn’t it? She ran the FRENCH TOASTS category

      ($200) “Bonne chance” means this
      ($400) “Cul sec” is the equivalent of these “up”
      ($600) “À votre santé” literally means this
      ($800) In 3 words, it says “long live” the country of Bardot & escargot
      ($1000) “Félicitations”, en anglais

      and Beth got all the clues in the OLD TESTAMENT FAMILY category ($1200 was a DD)
      ($400) Father of Japheth & Shem
      ($800) These 2 were the brothers of Cain
      ($1600) Son of Jacob; disliked brother of Simeon, Dan, Asher & others
      ($2000) Brother of Tamar, son of David

      LINK: 9 more clues from the match

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
        cul sec is kind of funny. In that sequence it means literally A** DRY…:):):)
        cul is also the derriere not just part of a glass…..

  7. John B./I. says:

    Congratulations to Lauren, yet another new champion!

    @VJ
    No, I was not joking. Also got the single HBS yesterday, when everybody thought many more would get her.I was surprised that Lauren got it today
    QVC is on the way down. Younger people don’t watch it, older people are wary about giving their cc # with all the scams. I would not buy stock in that company. On Maui some people were still watching it before bigger department stores were built, from Walmart too Target, Macy’s etc etc. Since then not so much anymore. Hardly anybody under 30 I know has any idea the channel even exists. Just because WE know it (HBS) does not mean others do….

    @Richard
    Left a short post re: “under representation” on yesterday’s recap for you, hope you get to read it.
    @Jacob
    What’s up. my friend? Haven’t heard from you for some time. I hope you are just fishing somewhere where there are no computers !! All OK??? Hope you had a nice 4th!

    Have a great and safe weekend everybody!!

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      How come? Alex said that it grew to $10 billion yearly. Besides, O Shopping is the Philippines’ answer to that.

      • John B./I. says:

        @John Christian
        Though QVC is U.S. based, they have channels all over Europe, Asia (even China). And with Amazon in the picture…. I would rather buy Amazon stock than QVC. They had an incredible run but it’s downhill from here on, actually it started already a few years ago. The majority of revenue and profit is coming from outside the U.S. for QVC. When TV was still hot, so were they. On the internet Amazon is way ahead. QVC was an ingenious idea, but their heydays are over.
