Final Jeopardy: Record Labels (12-22-17)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/22/2017) in the category “Record Labels” was:
This label, home to U2 & Bob Marley, was created, fittingly, in Jamaica with an investment of 1,000 pounds sterling.
New champ Johnny Leon won $11,100 yesterday. In his second game, he takes on these two players: Zach Heinen, from Burnsville, MN; and Donna Brown, from Seattle, WA.

Johnny found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Decade in the 20th Century” under the $800 clue on the 15th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,600, twice as much as Donna in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Johnny finished in the lead with $8,200. Donna was second with $5,000 and Zach was last with $3,400.
Round 2 Categories: I Know That Performer’s Face! – A Mighty Long-Named River – Middle “P” – Sculpture – Fearless Girl – Charging Bull
Donna found the first Daily Double in “Charging Bull” under the $1,600 clue on the 16th pick. She was in second place with $9,800 at this point, $7,200 less than Johnny’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT. Game changer!
This city has a sharp right turn from Mercaderes Street onto Estafeta; easy for a running man, less for a bull. show
Donna found the last Daily Double in “Fearless Girl” under the $1,600 clue, with 5 clues left after it. What a fitting category for Donna! In the lead with $22,800, she had $5,400 more than Johnny in second place. She fearlessly bet half her score, $11,400, and she was RIGHT.
A young woman from Chile moves to Calif. during the Gold Rush in “Daughter of Fortune” by this author. show
Donna finished in the lead with $32,600. Johnny was next with $17,400 and Zach was in third place with $5,400.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Chris Blackwell, who founded Island Records in 1959, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. His HoF bio calls him “the single person most responsible for turning the world on to reggae music” and says he chose the record label name after the novel “Island in the Sun,” (by Alec Waugh, we presume). A 1957 film by the same name was based on that book, featuring an “Island in the Sun” theme song by Harry Belafonte.
A 2016 interview with Chris Blackwell is on the Jamaica Observer, calling him “the most interesting man in the world.” Also, youtube has the BBC’s 50-year tribute to Island Records, “Keep on Running,” featuring many of its artists.
Zach wrote down Columbia. He didn’t bet a cent so he remained at $5,400.
Johnny came up with Kingston. That cost him $17,300, leaving him with $100.
Donna got it right. She added $13,000 to win the match with $45,600. So Donna Brown is the new Jeopardy! champ and we will see her again on Christmas Day. In the meantime, best wishes for a great holiday weekend to everyone who is celebrating.

Wow! The last time I held my breath during a contestant DD bet, I think it was during one of Philip Tiu’s game. Geez. I’m glad her huge bets paid off.
VJ do you still have the songs of Bob Marley and u2 on vinyl records somewhere in your house? Also Johnny should have bet at least 5000 dollars not nearly the whole farm though. Also what other songs are on island records nowadays?
@Lou, nope, I don’t have any vinyl anymore. I had a big 45 collection but I gave it to my church for one of their sales because no one would sit around playing them anymore like we used to. I do have some albums here that belong to my son and he’s a big Bob Marley fan, so maybe there’s one in there, I don’t know. (I gave the church my record player too).
LINK: 11 more clues from this match, including the “I Know That Face” category. That was cool!
I see but that’s very generous of you giving the records to the church. Also, donna made great moves to day but I hope she scores big next week like Philip tiu and Michael bilow did during their run. I’m hoping she can go to 100000, what do you think VJ?
Did you really like that Face category, VJ? I thought there was a “but you don’t know the name” implication there.
Also I thought the show with Barney Fife they were referring to was “The Andy Griffith Show” and the spinoff “Mayberry R.F.D ” was always in color.
@Lou, that would be great and she can get to $100K real fast at this rate 🙂
@mimsy, that clue on “The Andy Griffith Show” just asked for the name of the town. On the “Faces” category, that really never crossed my mind, but sometimes you think of an actor and actress by their name in a particular role. I used to think of Jennifer Coolidge as Betty when she was in “Secret Life.” Now I think of her as Sophie. :0
I always think of Gary Cole as himself, though the role I most remember him for was in “Fatal Vision.” Imho, Powers Boothe’s most notable role was as Jim Jones in “The Guyana Tragedy”
VJ, I remember Gary Cole from an 80’s series that I enjoyed called “Night Caller”, where he played a late night radio talk show host.
Didn’t he play Mike Brady in a couple of Brady movies in the 90s, too? LOL!
You’re right, VJ, I’d forgotten all about that !!
Boy, did Donna go big today!?
