Tim Tebow Homers in His First Minor League At Bat
It’s spring, and Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow continues to pursue his second sports career as a baseball player. Last fall, the New York Mets decided to give him shot, and signed him to a minor league deal. The Mets sent Tebow to their Arizona Fall League team in Scottsdale. It did not go well. In 19 games with the Scorpions, Tebow hit .184 with two RBIs and 20 strikeouts in 62 at bats. Nonetheless, the Mets invited Tebow to spring training.
Tebow hit .235, not real great, but the Mets were impressed enough with the athletic 29 year old to assign him to their Class A minor league affiliate in the South Atlantic League, the Columbia (SC) Fireflies.
Tebow had a pretty good first at bat in his debut in the Fireflies game against the Augusta GreenJackets. He hit it deep to left center and off the railing of the outfield stands. He thought it was a ground rule double, but the umpire indicated it was a home run. It was his only hit in five at bats, but a home run in a first at bat is pretty memorable.
So Tebow is back on the radar. Some, like Shannon Sharpe on Fox Sports’ morning gabfast ‘Undisputed’, dismissed this as being of no consequence, but let’s give the guy credit for pursuing his dream whether he makes it to the majors or not.
