The Final Jeopardy question (2/28/2017) in the category “Religion” was:
Famous Catholics who’ve publicly answered this question include Susan Boyle (sweets) & Paul Ryan (beer).
4x champ Kirstin Cutts brought her winnings up to $49,403 yesterday. Today she is up against these two players: Leanne Vincent, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and Rob Liguori, from Brooklyn, NY.
Round 1 Categories: Valleys – Beastly Movies – Abbrev. – Crossword Clues “Q” – Robots – Old Sturbridge Village
Leanne found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Valleys” under the $800 clue, with just one clue left after it. She was in third place with $1,200 when she found it, but she was awarded $400 on a second reversal. (See below) So she had $1,600, $5,400 less than Rob’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and took a guess with Devil’s Monument. That was WRONG.
Once a national monument, this valley in Wyoming became part of Grand Teton National Park in 1950. show
The round ended there and Rob finished in the lead with $7,000. Kirstin was second with $4,200 and Leanne was last with zero.
Round 2 Categories: On Your Left! – 1980s Bestsellers – A Show of Hans – Album Covers – Ancient Battles – Talk Like a Canadian
Leanne found the first Daily Double in “Ancient Battles” under the $1,600 clue on the 17th pick. She was in a negative $400 situation at this point. Rob was in the lead with $9,800. She bet half of the $2,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.
Defeat at the 207 B.C. Battle of the Metaurus River ended this man’s efforts to conquer Italy. show
3 clues later, Leanne found the last Daily Double in “Talk Like a Canadian” under the $1,600 clue. In third place with $600, she had $9,200 less than Rob’s lead. She bet the whole $2,000 allowance this time and took a guess with rum runners. That was WRONG.
Originally a derogatory term for Depression-era gasoline thieves, today it means any foolish or uncivilized person. show
Rob finished in the lead with $12,600 and Kirstin was next with $9,800. At negative $600, Leanne was out of the game at this point.
BOTH contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.
WHAT IS WHAT ARE YOU GIVING UP FOR LENT?
In various Christian denominations (not only Roman Catholic), Lent is the 40-day period that begins on Ash Wednesday. Christians may fast and abstain from eating meat on Fridays. “In addition to fasting, people from a variety of Christian denominations will also give things up for the 40 days of Lent…. Usually, these ‘things’ will be foods, habits, or other things that they find pleasurable. It’s common to see people give up their favorite foods, or vices like smoking or gossiping.” See Bustle.com for more on Lent, including the right response to this clue, a triple stumper in the 4/16/2008 Jeopardy! match:
RODENTS ($1000) A S. Am. delicacy, this water-dwelling herbivore was declared a fish by the Vatican so it could be eaten during Lent.
Kirsten bet $2,801 and finished with $12,601.
Rob bet $7,001, so he won the match with $19,601 and he is the new Jeopardy! champ.
Leanne’s 2 reversals:
CROSSWORD CLUES “Q” ($400) Those uneasy feelings. — Leanne’s “queasy” response was rejected. Kirstin got it with “qualms.” The judges decided to give Leanne this one.
VALLEYS ($200) Today part of Israel, the Valley of Elah is where these 2 fought as recounted in the first book of Samuel. — Leanne’s “the Philistines & the Israelites” was rejected. Rob’s “David & Goliath” was accepted. The judges decided that Leanne’s response was good because the clue did not specify 2 men.
2 triple stumpers from 1980s Bestsellers:
($1200) In 1981, he checked into the bestseller list with “Hotel New Hampshire”
($2000) The top fiction book of 1985 was Jean Auel’s novel about these ice age “hunters”

Another generation gap clue there on Longfellow. Back in the day, every school kid knew “Under the spreading chestnut tree, the village smithy stands.”

Since tomorrow is March 1, I want to go back to 2006 to watch Jeopardy! forever. LOL!
Congrats to rob on his win and Kristin did great but her 49000 isn’t going to cut it for the tournament of champions. I guess Philip might still make the cut if.Kristin is out.
Kirstin would still beat Philip as she won 4 games and he won 3.
Well, they have announced that the Teachers Tournament is coming up on May 8th to 19th on Jeopardy.com, so it doesn’t look too good for Kirstin or whoever else may manage to knock her off the list before May.
Then, when will the Tournament Of Champions really air if anybody knows? Don’t worry VJ, I will be patient.
42/57 here. The Sturbridge, Mass. Clue Crew category, not even saved for last, helped in part to leave one clue unplayed in round one and three clues unplayed in round two. Also, 1978-79 Jeopardy announcer John Harlan died on 2/27 at age 91
