Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Playwrights (1-26-17)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/26/2017) in the category “20th Century Playwrights” was:

He said of his 1949 play & its main character, “I could write about failure only because I could deal with it… I knew how he felt”.

2x champ Loren Lee Chen is up to $36,038 in winnings after 2 runaways. In his 3rd game, he faces these challengers: Josiah Drewien, from Hayden Lake, ID; and Christy Karras, from Seattle, WA.

An article on Loren’s bets: “Your Current Jeopardy! Champion Is Dropping Warriors Jokes Into His Final Jeopardy! Wagers” Let’s see if he gets to do that again.

Round 1 Categories: Oscar Hosts – Children’s Literature – A Balancing Act – “Doo” Or “Dy” – That’s My Scientific Name – Don’t Wear It Out

Josiah found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Scientific Name” under the $1,000 clue, with 10 clues to go after it. He was in third place with $2,000, $3,000 less than Christy’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and guessed butterfly. That was WRONG.

Christy finished in the lead with $5,800. Josiah was second with $1,000 and Loren was last with $800.

Round 2 Categories: Quotations – The Midwest – Uncrowned English Monarchs – TV That Cooks – Words For Travelers – Analys”S”

Loren found the first Daily Double in “Words for Travelers” under the $1,200 clue. There were 10 clues left after it just like before. He was in second place with $5,200 at this point, $8,200 behind Christy’s lead. He bet $2,200 and he was RIGHT.

2 clues later, Christy found the last Daily Double in “English Monarchs” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $14,200, she had $6,800 more than Loren in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

Christy finished with $23,600, the 3rd runaway in a row. Loren was next with $6,200 and Josiah was in third place with $4,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ARTHUR MILLER?

This quote comes from Arthur Miller’s “What I’ve Learned,” feature first published in the July 2003 edition of Esquire. Here it is in its entirety: “I could write about failure only because I could deal with it. Most of my work before Death of a Salesman, 98 percent of it was a failure. By the time Willy Loman came along, I knew how he felt.”

“Death of a Salesman” is No. 1 on EW’s list of the 50 Best Plays of the Last 100 Years (not including musicals)

Josiah didn’t have a response. He didn’t bet anything either so he stayed at $4,600.

Loren thought it was Tennessee Williams. He lost his $3,001 bet and landed in third place with $3,199.

Christy got it right. She bet $7,000 bet so she won the match with $30,600. Christy is the new Jeopardy! champ. Great payday! We bet Alex Trebek was as happy as Christie.

Sam I am was one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books and death of a salesman was also my favorite play back in high school. Although I would definitely read it again. Vj do you remember that play back in high school or maybe a few lines of it?

    • VJ says:

I must admit that I remember more of Sam-I-Am than Death of a Salesman, Lou.

      That Sam-I-Am, that Sam-I-Am,
I do not like that Sam-I-Am

Here’s one line I remember from DoaS: I don’t want change! I want Swiss Cheese!

I liked most of the categories in this game esp Quotations & Words for Travelers.

LINK 11 more clues from the game, including the Children’s Literature category. I got such a kick out of Sam-I-Am being described as a “persistent purveyor.” lol. If I wrote that clue, I would have went with pest.
