Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Santiago is Spanish for Saint James and refers to the patron saint of Spain, James the Apostle (or James the Great). Pedro de Valdiva founded Chile’s capital city in 1541, dedicating it to Saint James, as many South American and Caribbean cities were back then. Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar founded Santiago de Cuba, the country’s 2nd largest city, even earlier– in 1514.
Jeopardy! has had many clues about Chile’s capital over the years, but here is one that had to do with a different country’s capital that also honored St. James from 5/15/1999: SAINTS ($400) This country’s capital was orginally Santiago de Leon de Caracas, after Santiago, or Saint James
Garrett thought it was Asuncion, Paraguay’s capital. Its name honors the Assumption of Mary. That cost him $1,000 and he finished with $1,800.
Tim had the same response. He lost $3,600 and had $7,800.
Cindy got it right. She bet $10,601 so she won the match with $22,801. As you know from the news reports, Cindy passed away from cancer last week and donated her winnings to cancer research. How wonderful that she won this match! May she win more tomorrow.
A triple stumper from each round:
GEORGIA ($600) This founder’s name is on the Girl Scout National Center in Savannah

Oh wow didn’t notice that with Tim kutz and Tim Aten and they also both have four letter last names isn’t that really crazy and they both might be in the TOC
Tim Aten won 7 games though, so that puts him higher on the ToC list than Andrew Pau, Hunter Appler and Pranjal Vachaspati, all 6x winners. Then Tim Kutz is the highest on the 4x winners.
Tim Aten tweeted that he was unhappy about blanking out on the Final, and said he couldn’t complain about losing to a very good player, after 7 wins. There’s a player named Edward in Wednesday’s match who is from San Jose. I wonder if Edward and Garrett’s places had been switched, if Tim would have made the San connection.
btw, Santiago is a very popular first name. It’s the No. 1 male name in Mexico and was No. 127 in the most popular American male names in 2015.
My girlfriend is in a similar situation and my heart and thoughts go out to her boyfriend and family. I know nothing can bring back someone you’ve lost but it’s important to remember her as she once was, and not what the sickness turned her in to. Rest in peace my sister.
How gosh darn sad! Such a nice young person. I’m almost afraid to watch the show tonight, but I know that I will.
Uh, Alex didn’t even mention Cindy Stowell’s illness when this episode aired!
Guessing they’ll probably add something to the episode when her run ends. It’s so great that not only did she get to be on, but she became a champ and displaced a seven-game winner too. Was not expecting that – actually got choked up when she won.
me too!!
I’m glad he didn’t. I’m sure she wasn’t embarrassed, but I’m sure she and so many others, don’t wish to be defined by her illness. I think it was the right call.
Glad Cindy won. Wonder if she saw all the games she was on before passing away?
@Kaye, Yes, Cindy did get to see her games. The news report that I linked to in the recap is on the local Austin TV station’s website. The reporter visited and talked with Cindy’s boyfriend and it has some of the footage from this episode. Near the end of the video, the reporter states that Cindy got to see her game before it aired from her hospital bed.
Just guessing they didn’t say “games” because it would give away that she won and, somehow, they didn’t realize they were giving away all the games that Tim was going to win by publishing that last Wednesday. showing that Tim was still occupying the champ’s spot!!
Thanks so much for posting the link to the news report. I am glad that Cindy got to see her games before they aired. She was quite special, my heart goes out to her loved ones.
43/56 here
Wow. There wasn’t a dry eye in my household at the end of that game. What a courageous young lady. RIP Cindy.
So sad to see sweet Cindy on the show and know that she is no longer here. I am very happy that she won.
Rhonda, same here.
Same here, too. I actually had a dream that she won last night and am happy that the show put her on as soon as they could.
Of course, I did not see the FJ question in the dream but if I had, all 3 would have been right and Cindy still would win because she was in the lead.

RIP Cindy.I believe she’s the one who passed away last week. Congrats up there 😉
Glad to see Cindy won. Looking forward to seeing her again tomorrow.
I did not expect Cindy to win, but we’ll see Tim Aten in the Tournament Of Champions.
Why didn’t you expect Cindy to win?
$107,000 and $107,499 (just $499) separating Tim Kutz and Tim Aten.
