Final Jeopardy: U.S. Monuments (7-25-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (7/25/2016) in the category “U.S. Monuments” was:

Tuskegee Institute President Robert Moton couldn’t sit with the other speakers at its 1922 dedication.

Current champ Pranjal Vachaspati won 4 games and $89,188 last week. In his 5th game, he’s up against these two players: Anthony Szabo, from Portland, OR; and Kathy Krebs, from Philadelphia, PA.

We’re in the home stretch of Season 32, folks. Wouldn’t it be wild if Pranjal won every game this week and became a 9x champ like Buzzy Cohen?

Anthony found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Vice Presidents” under the $400 clue on the 12th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,200, $400 less than Pranjal’s lead. He bet $500 and could not come up with a response so he was WRONG.

Pranjal found the first Daily Double in “Holy Moses!” under the $1,600 clue on the 10th pick of the round. In the lead with $15,400, he had $15,100 more than Anthony in second place. He bet $7,500 and took a guess with “Go forth and conquer.” That was WRONG.

Astonishingly, he found the last Daily Double on his very next pick in “State Flowers” under the $1,600 clue. His lead had dropped to $7,900 now, $7,600 more than Anthony. He bet $7,000 and this time, he was RIGHT.

Pranjal finished in the lead with $22,500 another runway. Anthony was next with $5,900 Kathy was out of the game at this point, at negative $600.

BOTH of the contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL?

“At the Lincoln Memorial dedication ceremony, Dr. Moton delivered the keynote address, promoting equality among the races, even as he spoke to a largely segregated audience…. In 1921, Moton wrote a letter to President-Elect Warren G. Harding with a list of suggestions for improving race relations. Interestingly, Harding and Moton would share a platform just a year later, as both took part in the Lincoln Memorial dedication on May 30, 1922.” (Lincoln Memorial Important Individuals)

Anthony bet it all, doubling his score to $11,800.

Pranjal added $10,000 to win the match with $32,500. His 5-day total is $121,688.

Congratulations, Pranjal on your 5th win! We’ll see you in the next TOC, where you might be a tough force to be reckoned with.

  2. VJ says:

OK, I’ve got 8 extra clues from this match now, including the Who Made It? category in the first round — speaking of classics, they had Classic Yellow Mustard in there. Here’s the link

I didn’t put this one triple stumper in over there because Alex said the answer was “Pisgah.” I would have said Mount Nebo myself and I’m wondering if that would have been accepted. The link in the clue goes to the passage in Deuteronomy

($2000) Mounts that Moses summited include Sinai & this one from which he got a look at the Promised Land

Wow, there was a gigantic thunderstorm here all during Jeopardy! but, fortunately, it didn’t knock my TV out. It was so bad the dog was banging on my door so she could hide in here.

At the beginning of the show, Alex Trebek said that they will begin the reruns with the Tournament of Champions next week.

@Mathwiz congrats on predicting Pranjal to prevail again. He exceeded your financial expectation! And Anthony did think of the Washington monument but crossed it out.

Be back later with the extra clues

    • Mathwiz100 says:

That thunderstorm is also going on out here in PA, so… know what you mean…

Thanks for the congrats. I considered placing Pranjal at the 120k mark, but then I thought, “surely he won’t do that well”. At this point, I won’t be surprised now if Pranjal becomes the first to break the 200k mark this season.

    • rhonda says:

Awful thunderstorm was going on here, too. Hasn’t helped much with the horrid heat and humidity, though.

  4. Mathwiz100 says:

@VJ, Jacob, Rhonda, Cece, etc: It was quiet at the CotD today… hope that all is going well. I’ll assume that you were all busy or on vacation.

@Eric: Thanks for being the exception to the statement above.

@VJ: Congrats, VJ… we finally had a 2-player FJ, as you said. If only it had been a closer FJ…

As expected, all of the players knew the FJ. Also, for the millionth time in a row (fourth actually), Pranjal finds the DDs, makes it a runaway, and lives to see another day. VJ and Eric’s thoughts of another 9-day champ are becoming more and more likely… but we shall see.

About the Wrong Answers: Well the only wrong answer I can address is the Moses one in Double Jeopardy… “go forth and conquer” is along the lines of something that Jesus said, not Moses.

    • VJ says:

well I’ve been running a bit late all day here and it looks like it’s just gonna be that kind of week for me.

The DDs were a wash for Pranjal today really. I thought he was gonna go Daily Double on that second one. LOL! I’m guessing that on his, Anthony was thinking it can’t be Andrew Johnson, that’s too easy.

I just have to post a link to Paul Robeson’s “Go Down Moses..” i think everybody should hear it and to prove it, I’m gonna play it for the twins. 🙂

      • Mathwiz100 says:

That is a classic song indeed… and as they say, “the classics are called classics for a reason… they’re classic”.

    • rhonda says:

Thanks for mentioning me, Mathwiz. Wish I were away on vacation!

  5. EricS says:

Was Anthony assured of second place? Would he have been if the person in third had zero into FJ?

    • Mathwiz100 says:

If you are asking if a player can go into FJ with exactly $0… the answer is no. You have to have money to bet in FJ. So Anthony was assured of second place.

  6. EricS says:

If Pranjal wins out for this season, how will it affect him for next year’s ToC?
