Final Jeopardy: City Name Origins (4-21-16)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/16/2016) in the category “City Name Origins” was:
This city that’s home to an NFL team is named for an 18th century British prime minister.
4x champ Andrew Pau has now won $123,802. It’s GAME NO. 5!!! The challengers are: Jonpaul Guinn, from Providence, RI; and Beth Dunn, from Brooklyn, NY.
Round 1 Categories: Women, Immortalized – Popular Websites – Reality TV Judges – Around The World – You Need Food To Grow On – Short “E”
Andrew found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Women, Immortalized” under the $400 clue on the 12th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,200 when he found it, but in a reverse ruling, Jonpaul was awarded $2,000. That put Jonpaul in the lead with $3,800 and Andrew was now $1,600 behind him. Andrew bet $1,600 and he was RIGHT.

Andrew found the first Daily Double in “Movies’ Villains” under the $1,200 clue on the 4th pick of the round. In the lead with $8,600, he had $3,200 more than Beth in second place. Even though he was doing fine on the topic, he only risked $1,400. He was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Home to the Steelers (NFL), Pirates (MLB) and Penguins (NHL), the city of Pittsburgh, PA was given its name in 1758 by General John Forbes in honor of William Pitt the Elder, informal leader of the British cabinet during the French and Indian War and British prime minister from 1766-68. Gen. Forbes let William Pitt know about “Pittsbourgh” in a Nov 27, 1758 letter: “I have used the freedom of giving your name to Fort Du Quesne, as I hope it was in some measure the being actuated by your spirits that now makes us Masters of the place…”
Jonpaul didn’t have an answer. He lost his $5,000 bet and finished with $7,200.
Beth came up with Cleveland. That cost her $14,100 and left her with $100.
Andrew thought it was Abbottsford. He lost $8,011 bet but still had $12,399 left to win this match with… so, at last… we have our FIRST 5x CHAMP since the last Tournament of Champions! Andrew’s 5-day total is $136,201.
The Reversal: You knew it was coming, right? In “Short ‘E'”, the $1,000 clue was: “from Latin for ‘to instruct’, it means ‘learned’ or ‘scholarly'”. Alex ruled against Jonpaul’s “educated” response. Beth got what they were looking for with “erudite.”
The Fluke: Right before Beth got that last DD, the $800 clue in “Hyphenated Words” was: “Historically, these Germanic people lived in & ruled England & Wales until the Norman conquest.” Andrew rang in and, forgetting hyphenated, only said Saxon. He tried to correct it too late (Alex already said no). So Beth picked it up and supplied the Anglo- part.

I noticed Andrew was really getting conservative with his wagers. That almost cost him the 5x title!
I hope he continues for several more games
“Oh Happy Day….” wait…it’s not a happy day… But we finally have a fiver! Way to go, Andrew!
Beth could have won on the TS with a wager of $1800 or less, so Andrew wins in part because of the inoptimal wagering by Beth
Right, of course, but taking a closer look: for her to win, the leader would have to miss. So, if the leader misses, doesn’t that make it more likely that the third person might miss? I believe so.
At the very least, this is another clear example of how the person in second shouldn’t always bet big.
Congrats to andrew on him being a 5x champion. Its been months since the 2015 tornament of champions and now we got a miracle. But alex was pretty funny with the exclamation he made. How did they miss Pittsburg?
My guess was Foxboro.
I’m torn between whether I’m happier to see Abbottsford or Washington.
I think they both are funny.
Alex Trebek acted like they should have been able to correlate 18th century British prime ministers, cities and NFL as easily as Beth knew that Pillsbury Bake-Off answer. He seemed almost indignant after seeing Abbotsford.
“No! The City of Champions, Pittsburgh! For William Pitt the Elder!”
Andrew said he thought it was in Canada for some reason and Trebek exclaimed “No! NFL! National Football League…”
@vj, I thought that comment by Alex was funny. In other words we have NHL in Canada not NFL.
Sadly, Jeopardy! was pre-empted in Minneapolis today. Lots of Purple Rain.
sorry you missed it Berob. Tell me the category you would have liked to see most and I’ll post the clues in a little while
Thanks! Literary NYC would be good. Really appreciate the recaps when this happens!
OK – there are 10 clues on Page 2 now (incl all the Literary NYC clues)
@Berob, sorry for the loss in your town today. That’s a huge loss.
Finally a 5x champion! We really had a drought for a long time.
Congrats 5 times over Andrew.
