Final Jeopardy: Rock & Roll (9-28-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (9/28/2015) in the category “Rock & Roll” was:
The group Nazareth took its name from the first line of a 1968 song from this other group.
New champ Matt Jackson won Friday’s game and $21,200. He is back today to test his trivia knowledge and buzzer skills against these two players: Vicki Eastus, from Brooklyn, NY; and Jedidiah Smith, from Denver, CO.
Round 1: Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “From Page to Musical” under the $600 clue before the first break. He was in second place with $1,400, $400 behind Vicki’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.
Damon Runyon’s story “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” rolled the dice as this musical. show
Matt finished in the lead with $10,000. Vicki was second with $8,200 and Jedidiah was last, in the hole for $1,200.
Round 2: Matt found the first Daily Double in “Ode On A” under the $2,000 clue. He was in the lead with $12,400, $200 more than Vicki in second place. He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.
Keats wrote an “Ode to” this mythological persona who wed Cupid. show
Matt found the last Daily Double in “Botanists” under the $2,000 clue. He was now in the lead with $26,800, double Vicki’s second place score. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.
As a Professor of Botany at Uppsala University, he wrote several works including “Species Plantarum”. show
Matt finished in the lead with a runaway $35,000. Vicki was next with $14,200 and Jedidiah was in third place with $2,000.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS “THE BAND”?
“The Weight” was released in 1968 by the Canadian-American group The Band. It has been covered by so many solo artists and groups that we can’t even begin to list them. Aretha Franklin had the highest charting version in the United States. Her cover made the Top 20 in 1969. Songfacts has a bunch of info related to the song, including the choice of the name by Scottish rock band, Nazareth.
Jedidiah got it right. He bet $928 and finished with $2,928.
Vicki thought it was the Rolling Stones though she didn’t quite get it all written out. She lost her $10,000 bet and finished with $4,200.
Matt thought it was Janis Joplin’s band. Even if it was, he would have been wrong because her band has a name. He lost $5,000 and won the match with $30,000. His 2-day total is $51,200.
During the chat, Matt talked about his student days in Greece when he participated in a foot race down the original Olympic stadium and came in second to last. He said: “It’s all about the experience, isn’t it?” Maybe in foot races, but in Jeopardy, it’s all about bulldozing his way to victory.
2 years ago:: ONE of the players got this FJ in “Mount Rushmore.”
2 of the 4 men on Mt. Rushmore were born in Virginia; these 2 states were the birthplaces of the other 2 men. show

His breadth of knowledge is pretty remarkable. The only categories he can’t do much are pop TV culture. Otherwise he’s got command of just about everything.
Vicki would have had $18,200 going into FJ! if she’d phrased the Waged/Wagged response in DJ! (Add a letter category) in question form, That would have prevented a lock game, unless that would have caused Matt to bet more on the DDs that followed it
Not to take away from Matt — he played a great game and his haul was truly impressive—but Vicki held her own and finished with a nice total without hitting a single DD.
And Jedidiah, who had a tough time staying afloat, had the sole get on FJ—good for him.
(I got nowhere near even a guess at FJ.)
True, Matt didn’t get the jump on Vicki till he got that Cupid DD and I couldn’t help wonder if Vicki would have bet that big if she got the DD.
Matt’s FJ bet was today’s date.
As for FJ, we all come by the music trivia we know in different ways. The Band got their start with a singer named Ronnie Hawkins who migrated from Arkansas to Canada. An attorney I worked for was from Arkansas and a BIG Ronnie Hawkins fan. He gave me Hawkins’s bio to read. The weird thing was that my boss didn’t know one of Hawkins’ hits “40 Days” was a cover of Chuck Berry’s “30 Days.” He learned that from me.
I bet you like Chuck Berry’s better, Cece. 🙂
$928, of course! I did not think of it.
Yes, you’re right, VJ —definitely Chuck Berry, great song!
Purely coincidence that it aired on 9/28. It’s also my anniversary 🙂
Wow! That makes it even More Awesome. We viewers sometimes forget that these games are taped.
Happy Anniversary !! :):)
I got 53/61. $14,200 for a second place total at the end of DJ! usually means the player has a chance to win in FJ!, but not today.
P.S. Thanks so much for posting the video, VJ. Such a great song.
I know, I was shocked that he got it, too, lol!! I thought surely the lady would get it !!
@Rhonda, LOL!!!! One of the young’uns was the only one to get it. How shocking!
