Final Jeopardy: The Oscars (5-11-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (5/11/2015), in the category “The Oscars” was:
Last name of the only family to have a father & daughter receive Academy Award nominations for Best Director.
It’s Celebrity Week: Our first three celebrities are actor, Neil Flynn playing for Children’s Miracle Network; actress, Debra Messing, playing for Population Services International; and producer and director, Vince Gilligan, playing for the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Richmond.
Round 1: Neil found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Smash Broadway Musicals” under the $600 clue before the first break. He was in the lead with $600, $200 more than both Vince and Debra who were tied in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.
It’s set in the Jewish village of Anatevka in 1905. show
Neil finished in the lead with $4,000. Vince was second with $3,800 and Debra was last with $2,800.
Round 2: Vince found the first Daily Double in “Here Be Dragons” under the $1,600 clue. He was in second place with $10,600, $3,400 less than Neil’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double by saying “Let’s let it ride, Alex”, and he was RIGHT.
One dragon defeat was by him, now the patron saint of England.
show
Debra found the last Daily Double in “Mysteries of Laura, Stacy or Grace” under the $1,200 clue. In third place with $6,800, she had $16,400 less than Vince’s lead. She bet $5,000 and she was RIGHT.
This regal American actress became a true member of “High Society” when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. show
Vince finished in the lead with $23,200. Neil was next with $14,800 and Debra was in third place with $11,800.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Francis Ford Coppola has been nominated for Best Director 4 times for: The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974), when he won; and Apocalypse Now (1979); and The Godfather Part III (1990).
His daughter, Sofia, was nominated for Best Director for “Lost in Translation” (2003)
Debra got it right. Her $10,000 bet brought her up to $21,800.
Neil also got it right. He bet it all and finished with $29,600.
Vince thought it was the Hustons (John and Angelica). He lost his $8,300 bet and finished with $14,900.
That means that Neil Flynn’s charity gets $50,000. The charities that Debra Messing and Vince Gilligan played for will get the amount they finished with.
Here’s a quote from Neil from today’s chat: “Timing is natural and it can’t be taught.” And they are bringing back the post-game chats this week. Check it out:
2 years ago:: NONE of the players got this FJ in “Modern-Day China”
Because Internet censors block mentions of this 1989 date, Chinese bloggers write it as “535”. show

It’s all for good causes so kudos to the celebrities for participating and to the show for devoting a week to help the various charities
I couldn’t agree more. And I think it was a nice game.
I was surprised though by the writers use of the word “Janitor” in a category. The PC word nowadays is “Custodian”. 🙂
I’m looking forward to seeing G. Giffords’husband (M. Kelly) tomorrow on the show.
That’s because Neil Flynn’s character in the TV show Scrubs was simply known as “Janitor”.
Thanks Sandy. I wasn’t aware of that, as I’ve never watched the show Scrubs. 🙂
While raising awareness for different causes these exhibitions are supposed to be fun. I am glad many are enjoying them, I am sorry that more aren’t.
teenage material and the producer and director was the one who got this FJ wrong….’nuff said.
and math is not his strongest side either it seems…
Disagree!
I love his bet on the 2nd DD, with plenty of board left and playing for charity.
On FJ, assuming celebrities think in terms of Franklins, he bet enough to cover the double up and win on a triple-stump. Other than adding 99 to his bet, he wagered optimally.
I just realized the career for which I am smart enough: Celebrity!
Honestly, though, I was happy to see reasonable totals.
I liked the game, esp these two clues
TV Dads: $1600 – On Showtime, this Oscar winner plays Ray Donovan’s charismatic ex-con father, Mickey.
Action Words: $800 – to strike with a flat hand; Harry did it to little Hugo in a 2015 TV series.
I was surprised to see the last one, the show referred to was very recent. I think Neil got both these clues.
