Milk of the Gods Recap: Shameless

Did you watch the Season 5 premiere of “Shameless” (1/11/2015) early on the Showtime Free Preview or at its regular time? Whichever, the wild Gallaghers are back! We’ve taken a bit of a time jump from the dead of winter to the summer, and here’s what the gang is up to now:

Fiona’s got a new boss named Sean and they appear to be two baby steps away from a real relationship. He helped her put a pool in the Gallagher yard and mentioned coming to dinner, but after watching her flirt with the lead singer of the rock group Jezebel, Sean decided to make her pay the $12.99 for the pie that the Gallagher family ate that she forgot to put on their dinner bill. He even warned her that next time she tried that stunt, he would consider it stealing. Was this jealousy or is he another guy like Mike Pratt, the last boss she got involved with? Mike was already unhappy with the “Gallagher ingenuity” even before Fiona slept with his brother, Robbie.

Frank is engaged in a secret project. With the stuff he had Debbie helping him get together, we’re sure you could figure out he was building a still in Sheila’s basement. He was producing “Frank’s Milk of the Gods”. Sheila had her hands full trying to stop Sammi from sending Chuckie over so she could entertain men in her trailer. Sammi upped the ante, barging in and entertaining Rinaldo on Sheila’s sofa, right in front of her son! Frank was too preoccupied to set boundaries or give his wildy inappropriate daughter a kick in the rear, so Sheila had the locks changed, parked Chuckie in the trailer and told him to put a pillow over his head if his mother brought home a man. That didn’t stop Sammi. She took a crowbar to the new locks.

Lip bid farewell to Amanda for the summer. She gave him a Fossil watch and offered him free lodgings upon her return, but he didn’t seem too enthusiastic. He didn’t even kiss her goodbye. Stumpy and crew were on hand to party if Lip felt like hanging out with the neighborhood losers again. He didn’t.

Kevin and the twins, Amy and Gemma

Veronica was going through some serious cabin fever and the pain of breastfeeding. She wanted to switch the twins to formula and get out of the house so she left the kids with Kevin and went to work at the Alibi. Later after seeing that Kevin dealt with the babies well, she grabbed a cold one and admitted to Fiona that she wanted him to fail and be overwhelmed. “Jackass is a better mom than me,” V moaned. She’s definitely dealing with postpartum depression. Put that beer down, V. Fiona thought a pool party was just the thing to cheer everyone up.

Carl was suffering from a sprained or broken ankle from a skateboard accident and swiped a wheelchair to make life easier. He was sure he failed 6th grade again so he didn’t even go to school on the last day. Debbie had to deal with the cold shoulder from two of her school friends, Holly and Ellie. Although Fiona and Jackie assured her it would blow over, she vowed to never be friends with them again.

When it was ready, Frank showed his secret concoction to Fred (an Alibi patron brought over by Sammi): “If I can only have one beer a day, why not make it 130 proof?” he wanted to know. Fred’s tongue was hanging out for a taste. But as soon as his quota reset, Frank — being Frank — hogged the bottle and promptly passed out. Chester gulped down the little that was left and spit it out at once. Frank awoke buck-naked on the bench surrounded by art students. He wondered who took his clothes off but the instructor said they found him that way and marveled at his beautiful, perfect body. Yes, indeed. Frank certainly is a work of art.

Throughout the episode, a group of people were going around handing out flyers to homeowners. In the next episode 2, they will offer Sheila a lot of dough to sell her home.

I’ve been waiting for this for what seems like forever after the amazing season 4 finale, and I was almost getting ready to be let-down, but season 5 is off to a great start.

I am really interested to see where Fiona goes from here…it looks like she’s settling into a healthy, comfortable life, but to me that means they’re just setting us up for something crazy to happen to her, and I have no clue what angle it will come from.

Lip’s challenge of getting used to southside life after finally adjusting to the posh campus life will be interesting – I also loved how they incorporated the song “Going Out Tonight” by 1985 during the montage of Lip on the train as he heads to the southside.

Speaking of scenes that made great use of music, I loved the scene when Sean comes over help set up the pool, and “Skin of Our Teeth” by Great Northern made for a great backdrop. Sean’s one of the best fits personality-wise for Fiona, which inevitably means their break-up is going to be the most disastrous.

Do you really think Sean is a good fit personality-wise for Fiona, darci? That bit about the pie reminded me so much of Mike. Their initial issues revolved around lying.

That showed me that Sean is another straight arrow. Definitely never going to be happy with Fiona’s “Gallagher” ways.
