Final Jeopardy: Authors (9-15-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (9/15/2014), in the category “Authors” was:
In 1937 his sister said he had “hats of every description” which he would use as a “foundation of his next book”
Our returning champ is Winston Nguyen from New York, NY. Winston won $10,067 way back on July 18th. Returning for the first game of Season 31, he takes on these two players: Steve Lozano, from Virginia Beach, VA; and Elizabeth Williams, from Washington, DC.
Before beginning the game, Trebek mentioned that whether he will keep the mustache he grew back over the break will depend on viewer reaction to it. He said to send a tweet about it or leave a message on facebook. Maybe they will put up a poll on the Jeopardy! site but we didn’t see one.
Round 1: Elizabeth found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “States that Flow Together” under the $800 clue with one clue left on the board. She was in the lead with $4,200, $400 ahead of Winston in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.
The big land buy name for one also got us the other. show
Elizabeth finished in the lead with $6,200. Winston was second with $3,800 and Steve was last with $1,000.
Round 2: Winston found the first Daily Double in “C TO C” under the $1200 clue. He was now in the lead with $7,400, $1,200 more than Elizabeth in second place. He bet $2,000 and could not think of a reply so he was WRONG.

Steve found the last Daily Double in “Brit Bits” under the $1200 clue. He was in third place with $3,800, $2,800 less than Elizabeth in the lead. He bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT.
In 1613 a cannon spark during a performance of “Henry VIII” set this theater ablaze & it burned to the ground. show
Elizabeth finished in the lead with $13,400. Winston was next with $7,000 and Steve was in third place with $6,000.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO IS DR. SEUSS (THEODOR GEISEL)?
After the publication of Theodor Geisel’s first book in 1937, “And to Think that I Saw it on Mulberry Street”, his sister, Mamie, told the press about his hat collection and how he was planning on using it as the basis for his next book. In 1938, just as she said, “The 500 Hats of Batholomew Cubbins” was published. Dr. Seuss’ hat collection has been on tour in 2014, and there are still some places where you can see it. The red and white-striped hat on the “Cat in the Hat”, that Seuss would be most associated with, did not appear until 1957.
All Steve managed to get down was “Who is Z”. That cost him $5,000 and he finished with $1,000.
Winston wrote down “I’m sorry Claire”. He lost everything but $2.00.
Elizabeth started to write down “who is someone who’s never been in my kitchen”, but only got to the middle of never. She lost her $600 bet but won the game with the remaining $12,800.
So we start off with a new champ. Elizabeth Williams is a business research librarian. During the chat, it was mentioned that she has “ordinal linguistic personification”, but Alex said “original” and she did not correct him. It means she pictures numbers as having very detailed personalities. She said the number 9 has a mustache like Alex.

One does not correct Alex Trebek.
But Two is a little rowdy sometimes. …
Now, I really hope that my prediction of a repeating champ is not only true, but understated. It is times like these, accompanied by the NHL playoffs, which make me wish that I had a t.v..
That was a really pretty dress you were wearing, Elizabeth 🙂
Thanks, VJ. I got it from ModCloth.com, which is where I buy all my dresses. Cheers!
I know Trebek said Steve wrote “What is Z?” but I think that “Z” was a question mark (there was a dot under it), so he put down, “What is (blank)?” having drawn one — a blank, that is.
Well, here we go again with my negativity, but it seems the contestants are getting stupider with each passing season. So none of them knew that St. Louis is across the Mississippi from Illinois? Or that the Hoover Dam is on the Nevada-Arizona border? But they sure knew a lot about crappy television shows and popular so-called “songs.”
Yeah, I’m old, I know and I guess I really shouldn’t watch Jeopardy any more, and maybe I won’t, ok?
Tom,
First, it’s good to hear you!
Secondly, I really do wish that they would televise quiz-bowls (and bees) for you. Until then, Jeopardy is still one of the better things on.
