My Fair Lady: 1964 Best Picture

“My Fair Lady” won Best Picture at the 37th Academy Awards over another musical “Mary Poppins”. They had 12 and 13 nominations respectively, with “My Fair Lady” winning 8 Oscars and “Mary Poppins” winning 5.

The other films nominated for Best Picture were a comedy: “Dr. Strangelove” or “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” starring Peter Sellers; the dramatic “Becket” starring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole; and “Zorba the Greek”, starring Anthony Quinn.

Best Actor nominations came from all the films in the Best Picture nominees except “Mary Poppins”. Rex Harrison won for his role as Professor Henry Higgins.

The only Best Actress nomination from a film nominated for Best Picture was Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and she won. The other nominees were Anne Bancroft in “The Pumpkin Eater”, Sophia Loren in “Marriage Italian-Style”, Debbie Reynolds in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” and Kim Stanley in “Seance on a Wet Afternoon”.
