Final Jeopardy: Literary Quotes (1-28-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/28/2014), in the category “Literary Quotes” was:

A maxim of Ayn Rand was “man’s ego is” this “of human progress”

New champ Julie Singer won $30,000 in yesterday’s game. Today she tries for a second win against these two players: Cesar Perez-Gonzalez, from Germantown, MD; and Arthur Chu, from Broadview Heights, OH.

Cesar found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Palace of Nations” under the $400 clue. He was in third place with $1,400, half of Julie’s lead. He bet $600 and he was RIGHT.

Arthur finished in the lead with $4,400. Julie was right on his heels with $4,200 and Cesar wasn’t that far behind with $3,200.

Cesar found the first Daily Double in “National Flags” under the $1,600 clue. He was now in the lead with $6,400, $1,000 more than Julie in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Arthur found the last Daily Double in “Getting Nautical” under the $2,000 clue. In third place with $7,600, he had $2,600 less than Julie’s lead. He boldly made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Arthur finished in the lead with $20,000. Julie was next with $18,600 and Cesar was in third place with $9,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE FOUNTAINHEAD?

“Ayn Rand made a profound impact both as a philosopher who defined a new philosophic system, Objectivism, and as a novelist of penetrating insight and vision. Her novels are based on heroic ideals, demonstrating her famous maxim (from which she drew the title of her first best-seller) that ‘man’s ego is the fountainhead of human progress.'” (Ayn Rand, a Biography)

From 1995: WOMEN NOVELISTS ($200) This author of “The Fountainhead” graduated from the University of Petrograd in 1924

Cesar wrote down “equalivent.” That cost him everything he had so he finished with nothing.

Julie thought it was “the measure.” She lost her $18,400 bet and finished with $200.

Arthur got it right. He bet $17,200 so he won the game with $37,200, an even better payday than Julie got yesterday. Oh, what a feeling it must be!

And we have a new champ again. This was just one of those “you know it or you don’t” FJs. A lot of words could fit in to that blank and the chance of coming up with the correct word without knowing Ayn Rand’s works is slim indeed.

    1. i guess julie finished with 18.600.00?
    2. again- WHY NOT BET EVERYTHING?
had she bet everything and been right also – we have a TIE…..
it ALWAYS pays to speculate the leader might play for a tie- you have nothing to lose- if you are wrong, you’ve lost anyway, if the leader adds the 1.00 you lose as well, so you can only win, IF the leader goes for a tie. had she been right, julie would have kicked herself from california to missouri….

Thank you, and yes, she finished with $18,600. And now for another Literary Quote: “…tomorrow is another day.” Hopefully better, although still supposed to be cold weather here, but sunny, so hopefully they won’t feel the need to tell us to leave the faucets dripping, wrap up the pipes and take in the plants 50,000 more times. LOL!

you all have my sympathy! i feel silly, saying it’s cold when it’s around 60 and i have to put on a jacket a few days a year…we had a LOT of rain and floods though, after years and years of drought. especially where i live is a “pocket where it almost never rains. FINALLY. but spring will come fast…..it will even be more welcome after a winter like this. so stay warm and as comfy as possible!!!
