Usain Bolt Wins His Second Straight Olympic Gold Medal in the 100 Meters
Prior to the start of the Olympics, there were some hints that defending 100 meter dash gold medalist Usain Bolt might be beatable this time around in London. There had been some minor injury issues, either hamstrings or back, that had hindered him slightly, and then he finished second to Yohan Blake in the Jamaican Olympic trials. There might be a chance that Blake or Americans Justin Gatlin or Tyson Gay could pull an upset.
Well not this time. Bolt turned on the afterburners in the second half of the 100 meters final on August 5th, winning his second straight gold medal in the event. His time of 9.63 was an Olympic record. It was an extremely fast field of sprinters. Blake won the silver with a time of 9.75 and 2004 gold medalist Gatlin took the bronze with a 9.79.
Bolt enjoys the limelight, and is young enough (he turns 26 on August 21st) to be a contender in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. We think he’ll be there as the goal of becoming the only three time winner of the 100 will be too hard to resist. Bolt will have a chance of more medals both in the 200 meters and the relays, although Jamaica’s chances are diminished a little due to an injury suffered by Asafa Powell in the 100.
