Dallas: No Good Deed Recap

Elena and John Ross sit in the interrogation room at the police station. John Ross has to explain how he ended up in Fake Marta’s room. An officer comes in to tell them the bad news – the DNA under the victim’s fingernails are going to match his DNA and he’s under arrest!

After he’s booked, Mama Sue Ellen visits to inform him that she’s hired the best defense lawyer. He confesses to Sue Ellen what he doesn’t want Elena to know: he was sweating up the sheets with Marta. Sue Ellen is sure J.R. is involved in this and she wants to get in touch with him.

“Mama, this is my mess to clean up, not J.R.’s…” ~ John Ross Ewing

If Rebecca wants to get Christopher back, trying to make him feel guilty doesn’t look like it’s going to work. He says he’ll be the best parent he can be, but all he feels whenever he looks at her is anger. She wonders if they can ever get past that but Christopher doesn’t know.

Bobby is talking to Derrick from the Sheriff’s Dept. at Southfork, getting some background on Marta. Bobby thinks J.R. is behind Marta’s involvement in the Southfork deal, too. Derrick says the evidence is mostly circumstantial but, unless it’s ruled a suicide, it don’t look good for John Ross. Bobby points out that John Ross may be ambitious but he’s no murderer. Enter Christopher who is looking to get back to his normal pursuits. Enter Elena who wishes there was something more she could do, because she’s not even sure John Ross will be able to get bail. Christopher starts to storm off in a disgusted huff. Elena stops him and he says John Ross has no one to blame but himself.

“… you play with snakes long enough and eventually you get bit.” ~ Christopher Ewing

Elena asks if he is so angry that he wants to see John Ross get punished for something he didn’t do. She reminds Christopher that he and John Ross grew up together and were best friends but, Christopher says, that was a long time ago. Then he hauls ass after Derrick and asks him to do a background check on Rebecca.

Vicente visits John Ross in the pokey. He initially claims to know nothing about the video camera little shutter-bug Marta had on. “How could you do it,” John Ross asks, “Marta had problems but she wasn’t dangerous.” Vicente says disloyalty is dangerous and reminds him that he was the one who ratted Marta’s thievery out. John Ross says he’s going to come clean to the cops and Vicente warns him not to point fingers in the wrong direction. If he thinks Vicente is going to help him get out of jail, hah! Vicente says videos can be edited out of context and besides —

Paul Jacobs, Exxon-Mobil’s VP in charge of upstream research, drops in on Christopher. They want the exclusive rights to Christopher’s technology — using carbon dioxide to remove methane from hydrates — and they’re willing to pay handsomely. But Christopher’s keeping his technology for himself — it will be at the heart of Ewing Alternative Energies. Jacobs says he’ll be back because there’s a promotion in it for him. Yeah sure, if they know what he’s doing, they’d already have their scientists on it.

Ann is visiting with Rebecca when who should show up but Tommy! We told you siblings ain’t that easy to get rid of, at the same time expressing serious doubt about the authenticity of the sibling relationship between Rebecca and Tommy. Annie offers to help Tommy get a job on her cousin’s ranch in Oklahoma and he accepts – a little too quickly for it to be true.

Vicente pays Bobby a visit to tell him about his lien. He wants his oil or he’s taking Southfork. Bobby tells him the deal was fraudulent and it was with J.R., not him. Bobby says John Ross neglected to tell him that Bobby owns the minerals rights so he can get the hell out. He’ll never drill on Southfork even if he takes it. Vicente instructs some inmates to kick the stuffing out of John Ross and they warn him that if they don’t get that oil, the next time, he’s dead meat.

Bobby’s lawyer is sorry to say that Vicente’s lien is valid. As Bobby rages against J.R. and Vicente, Ann enters and tells them about John Ross. Off they rush to the prison. He may have internal bleeding and will be monitored for 24 hours. Bobby knows Vicente was behind this and tells Sue Ellen they must get him out on bail. Sue Ellen tells Ann that the only way she sees to help her son is to cross a line, a big one. What the hell are you telling Bobby’s wife that for, Sue Ellen. Are you nuts? If she crosses the line, she asks Ann, what will they make her? “A mother,” Ann replies.

We thought Christopher’s pained expression was over Elena caring too much for John Ross for his taste, but the wheels were turning in his brain. He finds out more about the situation from John Ross, who expresses regret over getting everyone mixed up in this mess and trying to measure up to J.R.

Bobby decides to drill on Southfork to save John Ross and pays a visit to Miss Ellie’s grave to let her know.

“Our family is as fractured and dysfunctional as always.” ~ Bobby Ewing

But Christopher makes a deal with Vicente for the exclusive South American rights to this technology in exchange for Southfork and the video that will exonerate John Ross. Poor Sue Ellen already crossed the line by both bribing and threatening the Medical Examiner to rule the death a suicide.

I have sources that have told me that you’ve been writing more prescriptions than Michael Jackson’s doctor, which is odd since all of your patients are dead. ~ Sue Ellen Ewing

Bum called J.R. in Vegas who presses him to find out what Cliff is up to before “Sue Ellen steps in it,” but Bum is calling about John Ross. Besides, Sue Ellen is doing a good job of stepping in it all by herself. J.R.. comes to the hospital and is shocked to see firsthand the results of throwing John Ross in the briar patch. The next day, John Ross tells Sue Ellen he dreamt his daddy came and he must be high from all the drugs. Just then he finds out that he’s off the hook. They found the video footage.

But the M.E. tells Sue Ellen that the real deal is Fake Marta had defensive wounds. John Ross is innocent in her death but someone else isn’t. She confides her misdeed to Annie. We’re sure she’ll make a great governor.

After he and John Ross mend their fences, Christopher learns that Rebecca’s background is clean. Feeling he’s at least misjudged that, he delivers the report to her. That’s a step forward in her book but Christopher needs to know there are no more secrets. Oh, no, of course not. He leaves and she is looking over the report when Tommy re-appears. Does this guy still have a key or what? Tommy knows about Exxon-Mobil and warns Rebecca if she doesn’t get him what he wants, Christopher is going to find out a real big secret — they ain’t siblings. LOL!

And so that shoots down all the Bobby and Betsy Ewing theories. Guess Tommy is just your garden variety con man. But don’t lose hope, Rebecca could still be Cliff’s daughter. Whoever she is, just stick a fork in that marriage — it’s done.

Definitely thought that this was one of the weaker episodes. If Rebecca turns out to be Cliff’s daughter, that might appease some of it, but so far her whole storyline (and everything with Elena) has been very blah.

My issue is that everything to do with John Ross’ prison sentence feels like it was so easily resolved that there are no stakes. Hopefully they maximize how much Sue Ellen’s career is screwed now.
