Norway Upsets Brazil in World Cup Play
Erling Haaland scored twice to lead Norway to a stunning 2-1 win over traditional powerhouse Brazil in the Round of 16 in World Cup play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 5th. The goals were the sixth and seventh for Haaland in the tournament.
It was the earliest Brazil, a five time champion, had been eliminated in 36 years. Norway advances to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history, which is just four tournaments; 1938, 1994, and 1998 being the others. The Norwegians are 2-0 all time against Brazil, beating them 2-1 in 1998. Since winning their last championship in 2002, Brazil’s best finish was fourth place in 2014.
