Yankees Belt Nine Home Runs in a Game for the Second Time This Season

The New York Yankees lead the major leagues in home runs, and that was on display August 19th in their game at Tampa Bay. The Yankees hit nine home runs on their way to a 13-3 rout of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger, and Jose Caballero each hit a pair of homers, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., Ben Rice, and Aaron Judge hit one each. It was Judge’s 40th of the season. The Yankees also hit nine homers on March 29th in their 20-9 win over Milwaukee; this is the first instance of a team hitting nine home runs in a game more than once in a single season. Chisholm Jr. and Bellinger hit home runs in both games.

The record for home runs in a game was set by the Toronto Blue Jays on September 14, 1987. The Jays hit 10 in a 18-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The only other instance of nine or more home runs was on September 4th, 1999 when the Cincinnati Reds hit nine in a 22-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The current Yankees’ manager, Aaron Boone, hit one of the Reds’ homers.
